As a Field Service Engineer [Customer Engineer] at Applied Materials, you serve as the direct liaison with customers, collaborating closely to install, maintain, and upgrade equipment. You'll use digital analytics for troubleshooting and apply basic diagnostic techniques to assess and address technical issues. Your responsibilities include performing preventative and corrective maintenance on various systems such as electrical, vacuum, mechanical, plasma, hydraulic, and gas systems. Additionally, you'll coordinate and communicate directly with customers to ensure smooth operations and exceptional service.

 

 

About the Role

As a Customer Engineer III, you'll play a critical role in supporting some of the world's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing environments. Working directly with customers and cross-functional teams, you'll help maximize equipment performance, uptime, productivity, and operational excellence through the installation, maintenance, and optimization of Applied Materials' leading-edge technologies.

This role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on technical expertise with customer engagement and problem-solving while building a long-term career within a global technology leader. Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, qualify, and upgrade Applied Materials equipment within customer manufacturing facilities.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex equipment issues through a structured troubleshooting and root-cause approach, escalating when required.
  • Support customers in achieving critical performance objectives related to equipment availability, productivity, and process stability.
  • Collaborate with Senior Customer Engineers and customer stakeholders to understand technology roadmaps, operational priorities, and manufacturing challenges.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance across electrical, vacuum, mechanical, plasma, hydraulic, and gas systems.
  • Lead and coordinate technical activities during equipment install, startup, qualification, and ramp phases.
  • Train, coach, and mentor junior Customer Engineers, helping to build technical capability across the team.
  • Build strong customer relationships through effective communication, responsiveness, and service delivery.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and share best practices to drive operational excellence.
  • Ensure all activities are performed in accordance with Applied Materials' safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Fulfil additional duties and project assignments as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree, military technical training, trade certification, or equivalent technical experience.
  • 4-7 years of experience within the semiconductor industry or a related capital equipment, advanced manufacturing, or equipment support environment.
  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude with experience in pneumatics, hydraulics, vacuum systems, electronics, thermodynamics, or related technologies.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving experience within a customer-focused technical environment.
  • Experience working with hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and digital multimeters.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work directly with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to obtain a passport if business travel is required.
  • Ability to meet all site-specific requirements, including safety, environmental, and customer compliance standards.

Physical Requirements: 
This position often requires extensive walking, standing for extended periods of time, working in tight spaces, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, working at height, lifting up to 35 lbs., the ability to distinguish between colors and working with electricity, the ability to work in an environment with noise that may be difficult for some individuals with sensitivity to noise, and the use of hand and power tools.  Additionally, because this position generally involves working in a clean room, it requires the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment such as coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, chemical aprons, and face shields.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.


For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
