Russia Editorial Assistant 

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an editorial assistant to become part of the paper’s Russia Bureau.

We are looking for a researcher with the ambition to help our Russia bureau take readers inside the country at this extraordinary moment. It will take dogged and creative reporting and a collaborative spirit.

The ideal candidate will be fluent with economic data, corporate databases and the best methods for tracking down people we need to speak to. That candidate will be able to follow specific reporting instructions and also suggest reporting approaches for our stories. The job will demand a deep understanding of how the Russian government and its most influential security agencies operate. Our researchers will show both skill and determination in getting in touch with government officials and average Russians.  

Our bureau is based in Berlin, and travel to Russia isn’t possible for either correspondents or researchers. 

You will:

• Keep track of news inside Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe. 

• Enthusiastically help us report out our various story themes, from Kremlin policy, the war economy, escalating tensions with Europe and the shifting relations with China and other Asian neighbors. 

• Dig in Russian corporate databases, government and economic data. 

• Find relevant government officials, experts and average Russians for interviews. 

• Work collegially with correspondents inside the bureau and other various teams, including in Washington, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

• Practice necessary cyber hygiene to protect yourself, our correspondents and sources.

 

You have:

• Experience working as a reporter, stringer or researcher. 

• Native Russian, fluent English.

• Experience in finding and working with economic data, corporate databases and other open source resources.

• Knowledge of government ministries and agencies, as well as security services, proven ability to track down important players within ministries and agencies.

• Enthusiasm and willingness to spend time tracking down average people inside Russia even as that becomes more difficult

• Strong reporting instincts.

• An open mind and a strong sense of ethics.

Base Pay Range: 45,000 - 55,000
