The UBC Centre for Disease Control is seeking a full-time Research Associate to support a program of research focused on hepatitis B elimination in Canada.

 

The position will be based at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and will primarily focus on supporting a CIHR-funded project entitled, "Getting to Hepatitis B Elimination in Canada: Where are the Gaps and How Best to Fill Them?". Other areas of work include hepatitis C and B epidemiology, co-infections and assessment of the impact of interventions such as treatment on outcomes. Projects undertaken will use data from (i) the IDEALS mart, a longitudinal study of all people in British Columbia tested for or reported as a confirmed case of HCV, HBV, HIV/AIDS or active TB linked with medical visits, hospitalizations, prescription drugs, cancers and deaths since 1992, and/or (ii) the BC COVID-19 Cohort, a surveillance platform which integrates COVID-19 laboratory tests, COVID-19 case data, COVID-19 vaccination data, medical visits, hospitalizations, prescription drug dispensations, ICU admission, vital statistics and other census data,

 

BCCDC is the provincial public health service providing disease surveillance, detection, prevention, treatment, policy development and health promotion programming to promote and protect the health of British Columbians. We have a strong interdisciplinary group of epidemiologists, statisticians, infectious disease and public health physicians, mathematical modelers, and policymakers working in a data-rich environment with many learning and development opportunities. This position is a great learning opportunity for Hepatitis B surveillance, policy development and translation of research to inform policy and program.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to Dr. Naveed Janjua, the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Leading and coordinating epidemiologic and population health research studies using linked administrative, laboratory, surveillance, and clinical datasets.
  • Conducting statistical analyses using large longitudinal databases.
  • Supporting development and maintenance of population-based hepatitis cohorts.
  • Designing and implementing observational studies examining HBV care cascades, health outcomes, and health disparities.
  • Preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
  • Drafting technical reports, knowledge translation products, and policy briefs for government and community partners.
  • Contributing to grant development and funding applications.
  • Collaborating with researchers, trainees, public health agencies, and community stakeholders across Canada.
  • Presenting research findings at scientific conferences, stakeholder meetings, and workshops.
  • Supervising research staff, graduate students, and trainees as appropriate.
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing to broader IDEALS mart and BCCDC research activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful applicants will have:

  • Completed a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. epidemiology or public health) with strong quantitative skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience and demonstrated expertise conducting population-based research and longitudinal cohort analyses using linked administrative health data
  • An established track record of original, first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals is required.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of large multidisciplinary teams with collaborators, is desirable.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: viral hepatitis, health systems and services research, engaging with stakeholders, geospatial modelling, and multilevel modelling
  • Experience preparing research reports, grant applications, and presentations.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 

The expected salary for this position is $85,000 per annum. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
