The Regional Practice Leader is responsible for the strategic growth, operational performance, technical quality, and overall success of the Solid Waste/Environmental Practice within the assigned region. This position provides leadership to practice staff, strengthens client relationships, supports business development, and ensures projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the firm’s quality standards.

Working collaboratively with office, regional, divisional, and corporate leadership, the Regional Practice Leader develops and implements strategies that align regional priorities with the firm’s broader business objectives. The position also promotes collaboration across offices and disciplines to provide clients with comprehensive, practical, and responsive solutions.

Duties

• Strategic Leadership
• Develop and implement a regional business plan that establishes priorities for growth, staffing, client development, technical capabilities, and financial performance.
• Identify emerging market needs, regulatory developments, and service opportunities affecting public- and private-sector solid waste/environmental clients.
• Establish measurable goals for the practice and regularly evaluate progress.
• Coordinate with Division Director, Division Business Development Director, and Regional Director to align regional initiatives with broader Regional strategic objectives.
• Promote collaboration and consistent service delivery across offices, disciplines, and geographic markets.
• Business Development and Client Relationships
• Work with Division Business Development Director to:
• develop, maintain, and strengthen relationships with current and prospective clients.
• monitor the regional opportunity pipeline and coordinate business development activities with practice and office leadership.
• Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and introduce additional firm capabilities.
• Serve as a trusted adviser by understanding clients’ operational, regulatory, financial, and long-term planning needs.
• Lead strategic pursuits, including go/no-go decisions, teaming strategies, proposal development, interviews, and contract negotiations.
• Maintain an active presence in professional organizations, industry associations, conferences, and community activities.
• Operational and Financial Management
• Oversee the regional practice’s workload, staffing, utilization, revenue, profitability, backlog, and accounts receivable.
• Work with project managers to allocate resources effectively and balance workloads among offices and teams.
• Assist in developing annual budgets, revenue projections, staffing plans, and investment priorities.
• Evaluate project performance and implement corrective measures when financial, schedule, scope, or quality concerns arise.
• Promote efficient project delivery and responsible management of client and company resources.
• Support contract review, risk management, and compliance with established business practices.
• Project Delivery and Technical Quality
• Provide executive and technical oversight for significant, complex, or high-risk projects.
• Ensure services are delivered in an effective, timely, professional, and financially responsible manner.
• Promote consistent application of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
• Confirm that project teams clearly define scope, schedule, budget, responsibilities, deliverables, and client expectations.
• Support project managers in addressing technical challenges, regulatory issues, contract concerns, and client needs.
• Encourage practical, constructible, and cost-conscious solutions that reflect clients’ operational objectives.
• Staff Leadership and Development
• Recruit, retain, mentor, and develop high-performing technical and project management staff.
• Establish clear expectations and provide timely, constructive feedback.
• Support employee development through training, coaching, professional licensing, leadership opportunities, and succession planning.
• Identify emerging leaders and create opportunities for them to assume greater technical, project, client, and business responsibilities.
• Foster an inclusive, collaborative, accountable, and safety-focused workplace.
• Promote effective communication and knowledge sharing throughout the regional practice.
• Solid Waste/Environmental Practice Areas
• The Regional Practice Leader may oversee services such as:
• Landfill planning, design, permitting, expansion, closure, and post-closure care
• Solid waste master planning and system evaluations
• Transfer station and convenience center planning and design
• Recycling, composting, and materials recovery programs and facilities
• Landfill gas collection, control, and beneficial-use systems
• Leachate collection, treatment, and management
• Waste characterization, capacity analysis, and operational consulting
• Construction administration, construction management, and certification
• Financial planning, cost estimating, and capital improvement programming
• Environmental monitoring, assessment, and remediation
• Stormwater management and environmental compliance
• Environmental due diligence
• Site evaluations, geological investigations, and related technical studies
• Ecological and wetlands services

Salary Range: $135,000-$160,000 per year

The specific salary offered may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, geological, or related engineering or environmental science field; advanced degree preferred.
• Professional Engineer/Geologist license preferred.
• Substantial experience in solid waste compliance or engineering, environmental consulting, or a related professional-services field.
• Demonstrated success leading teams, managing complex projects, developing client relationships, and achieving business growth.
• Strong understanding of solid waste/environmental regulations, permitting requirements, facility operations, and industry trends.
• Experience managing budgets, project performance, staffing, and financial objectives.
• Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-management skills.
• Ability to travel throughout the assigned region as necessary.
