Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer (26-422) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to plan ballistic missile defense operations systematically, collectively monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals.

C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations, both globally and regionally, to improve performance. C2BMC is essential for all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of missile defense systems.

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join one of the C2BMC Regional Applications teams in Colorado Springs, CO, with potential focus areas that include User Interface, Enterprise Services, or System Architecture.

Essential Functions:

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain software in Java/J2EE (and other object-oriented technologies as appropriate) in support of C2BMC Regional Applications

  • Work under minimal direction, providing specialized expertise across multiple systems and software disciplines, and integrating knowledge of related domains, application implications, and customer mission needs

  • Perform in-depth analysis and technical support of systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support

  • Work from specifications to develop or modify operating system–level applications and services that enable C2BMC mission capabilities

  • Assist with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs, ensuring high reliability and performance

  • Design, code, test, and implement tools to support operations automation and improve overall system efficiency and maintainability

  • Interface with other system support groups, including systems engineering, integration, test, cyber, and operations, to resolve problems, establish standards, and improve the efficiency and resiliency of the operating environment

  • Support integration and test activities to validate new capabilities and ensure successful deployment into operational environments

  • Maintain currency with evolving technologies and program standards, applying best practices to improve software quality continuously

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design descriptions, test procedures, test reports, and user support materials

  • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performance team culture by actively participating in Agile ceremonies, technical discussions, and process improvement initiatives

Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree

  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start

  • Understanding of software engineering and software development, with Java/J2EE experience or alternate object-oriented development experience (additional experience with C++ is also desired)

  • Experience and knowledge of software engineering practices such as:

    • Coding standards and peer reviews

    • Automated testing (unit, integration, and/or system tests)

    • Automated build pipelines and CI/CD

    • Configuration management and version control

  • Experience developing enterprise applications on Linux-based systems (Windows experience also desired)

  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to review performance and operational issues, identify root cause, recommend, design, and implement effective solutions

  • Use of common software development and management tools such as Maven, Git/GitHub, Nexus, and Eclipse (or similar IDEs)

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies

  • Understanding standard systems engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams, and how they drive software design and implementation

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced, collaborative team environment

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time for business needs, if required by the program

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these additional qualifications will be especially competitive:

  • Command and control system application development experience, particularly in large, distributed, real-time or near–real-time systems

  • Experience with software integration and formal testing, including integration in complex multi-system environments

  • Knowledge and experience implementing Cyber Security and Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements within software solutions

  • Ability to present advanced technical concepts to non-software engineers, including senior program leadership and military stakeholders

  • Experience with performance modeling, performance tuning, and scalability analysis

  • Experience with microservices architectures and related technologies

  • Experience with DevSecOps practices and/or build and release management
