Working closely with Department staff, partner agencies, community organizations, and volunteers, this person will coordinate and lead workshops, field days, and other programs that introduce participants to outdoor recreation and help them continue or return to these activities. The position supports the Department’s recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) efforts through welcoming, practical learning opportunities.

Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer instructors and mentors is a central part of this role. We are looking for someone who enjoys building relationships, helping others succeed, and working as part of a team to deliver engaging educational experiences.

Responsibilities include developing and evaluating programs, creating lesson plans and public educational resources, teaching participants with a range of ages and experience levels, and presenting programs both in person and virtually. This person will also maintain programming equipment and help coordinate and staff the Department’s outreach events, shows, and fairs.

The position involves office work in Augusta and substantial fieldwork throughout Maine, engaging directly with the public. Some duties may be performed remotely. Outdoor work is required in all seasons, sometimes in mildly inclement weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Significant experience in public relations, journalism, or a closely related field demonstrating possession of knowledge and skill in educational outreach, public relations, media, and information dissemination practices and techniques.
