SMX is seeking a Project & Revenue Accounting SME. The Project & Revenue Accounting SME reports directly to the Senior Director, Finance and serves as a subject matter expert for project and revenue accounting. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely revenue recognition, supporting an effective month- and quarter-end close, maintaining compliance with GAAP and ASC 606, and driving improvements that strengthen financial reporting, controls, and operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate brings deep experience in project accounting and revenue recognition within a highly regulated environment, expert knowledge of ASC 606, advanced Excel and Costpoint capabilities, and the ability to independently analyze complex issues and partner effectively across Finance, Accounting, Contracts, and Operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert for project and revenue accounting, providing technical guidance and issue resolution across all levels of the organization.
- Ensure revenue is recognized accurately and timely in accordance with ASC 606, ASC 340, GAAP, applicable contract terms, and Company policies.
- Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for Costpoint, including revenue formulas, project configuration, and revenue-related system issues.
- Partner with Business Unit Finance Leads, Program Managers, Contracts, and Accounting to ensure project setup, contract structures, and system configurations support appropriate revenue recognition and financial reporting.
- Lead key aspects of the month- and quarter-end close, including unbilled revenue reviews, revenue-at-risk analysis, project cost and profitability fluctuations, revenue adjustments, and identification and resolution of accounting issues.
- Research and resolve complex unbilled and revenue-related issues, maintaining strong audit readiness and ensuring appropriate documentation and support.
- Develop and deliver detailed financial analyses and reporting to identify trends, anomalies, revenue recognition risks, project-level issues, and opportunities for corrective action.
- Interpret complex contracts and apply revenue recognition methodologies across CPFF, CPAF, T&M, FFP, Commercial, and other contract types.
- Monitor revenue accounting controls; identify control gaps and opportunities to strengthen the revenue accounting environment.
- Support DCAA, DCMA, interim, and annual financial statement audits, including requests related to revenue look-backs, unbilled balances, revenue timing, and ASC 606 compliance.
- Operate with a high degree of independence, sound judgment, and accountability while serving as a trusted advisor to Finance and Operations.
Required Skills/Experience
- 6+ years of current, consecutive experience in project accounting and revenue recognition.
- Expert knowledge of ASC 606 and strong working knowledge of GAAP, FAR, and accounting requirements applicable to highly regulated environments.
- Demonstrated experience supporting DCAA and DCMA audits.
- Current, hands-on experience with Deltek Costpoint, preferably Costpoint 8.2.2026.3 or the current production version.
- Recent experience with Cognos.
- Advanced/Expert Excel skills, including the ability to analyze large data sets and develop sophisticated financial analyses and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex Costpoint and revenue accounting issues.
- Current experience applying revenue recognition methodologies across multiple contract types, including CPFF, CPAF, T&M, FFP, and Commercial contracts.
- Strong analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to identify issues, assess risk, determine root causes, and drive resolution.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced accounting organization; experience in a private equity-backed environment is preferred.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to bridge Finance, Accounting, Contracts, and Operations.
- Independent, critical thinker who can quickly become effective in the role and requires limited supervision and onboarding.
Desired Skills/Experience
- Current, hands-on experience with Deltek Costpoint, preferably Costpoint 8.2.2026.3 or the current production version.

- Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced accounting organization; experience in a private equity-backed environment is preferred.
