This position sits within the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement), a University-wide division advancing UQ’s commitment to recognising Indigenous knowledges, connections to Country and respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Led by Professor Bronwyn Fredericks, the Division drives key priorities including the Reconciliation Action Plan, Indigenous employment pathways, student success, community partnerships and the integration of Indigenous perspectives across teaching, research and organisational practice.

About the role

The Pro‑Vice‑Chancellor (Indigenous Education and Research) is an accomplished Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander academic leader with Professorial‑level standing and strong community trust. The role requires deep cultural authority, a credible academic profile, and a demonstrated record of impact across Indigenous education, research and engagement. Working in close partnership with the Deputy Vice‑Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement), the PVC shapes whole‑of‑University priorities, guides major initiatives such as the Indigenous Curriculum framework, and contributes to senior governance forums with confidence and clarity.

Success in this position relies on collaborative leadership, cultural integrity and the ability to influence a complex academic environment. The PVC fosters meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations, champions ethical and sustained partnerships, and strengthens pathways for Indigenous students, researchers and staff. The role calls for highly developed interpersonal and cross‑cultural capability, a steady and reliable presence in senior leadership, and a commitment to advancing reconciliation, Indigenous excellence and long‑term institutional change.

About you

Steady, culturally grounded and influential through relationships rather than directive authority, you will foster ethical engagement with communities, strengthen pathways for Indigenous students, researchers and staff, and advance reconciliation, Indigenous excellence and long‑term institutional change across the University.

Selection Criteria

• Demonstrated academic leadership at Professorial level, including experience contributing to curriculum, research or governance in a university setting.
• Proven ability to influence change across a complex organisation, working through relationships, collaboration and cultural authority rather than directive power.
• Experience applying evidence‑informed and culturally grounded practices to strengthen Indigenous education, research or student success.
• Credibility to represent Indigenous priorities and perspectives across senior committees, faculties and external partners, with strong cultural integrity and community trust.
• Strong relationship‑management and communication skills, including cross‑cultural capability, negotiation, diplomacy and the ability to build alignment across diverse stakeholders.
