The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applications for a Postdoctoral associate position in meteorology. The research focus is on boundary-layer dynamics and air-sea interactions in tropical cyclones (TCs) using an observational database and high-resolution numerical simulations. Related fields with similar expertise will be considered as well.

The incumbent will contribute to research that develops, analyzes and maintains both observational and numerical model data sets critical to our understanding of TC structure and intensity. The primary role of the incumbent will be to document, assess and quantify the impact of emerging technology data sets (e.g. drones/UAS, high altitude balloons, swarm-capable dropsondes, robotic ocean expendables, etc). Impact can be realized through numerical and AI modeling, heightened situational awareness, optimized sampling, and greater operational efficiency. The successful candidate will also contribute to research that emphasizes the analysis of observational data sets obtained by NOAA to further understand internal processes of TCs, leading to enhanced forecasts, elucidate on boundary-layer processes related to TC intensity change, and evaluate and improve hurricane model physics. With the direction of science leads, the incumbent will be expected to pursue publication of scientific results in top-tier peer-reviewed journals. Other activities may include assisting in research investigations on air-sea interactions and participation of the annual NOAA Hurricane Field Program to collect novel observations.

Department Specific Functions
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Develop clearly written code and comments to analyze observational data sets.
• Use AI/ML concepts and development to analyze observational data.
• Produce peer-reviewed manuscripts.
• Present the results at conferences.
• Run and analyze a high-level numerical model
• Adhere to industry and institutional standard operating procedures.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Required education is a PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Engineering or closely related field. Knowledge of air-sea interactions and boundary-layer processes in hurricanes is preferred. We encourage motivated individuals with advanced programming skills and strong publication records to apply. Some skills in analyzing/evaluating large data sets are highly desirable. Knowledge of an advanced programming language such as MATLAB, Python, etc. is required. Basic understanding of the current state of tropical cyclone research is required. Experience with field experiments and hurricane forecast models is a plus. The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.
