The Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery participates in a joint research project with the Department of Ophthalmology focused on Ocular Oncology and the advancement of research in cancer biology, therapeutics, and survivorship. Research may include the study of ocular cancers and related mechanisms of disease, treatment, and survivorship. This role provides advanced research and scholarly training to support development of an independent research career. The fellow conducts research under the guidance of a Principal Investigator (PI), engages in professional development activities, and contributes to independent and collaborative research, dissemination of findings, grant development, and laboratory activities.Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
- Education: PhD or equivalent terminal degree (e.g., MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD) in cancer biology, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, or related field.
- This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
- Work Experience: Experience or training in cancer biology and/or immunology. Experience analyzing and interpreting research data.
- Skills: Multitasking, problem solving, analytical skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in molecular biology.
- Experience modeling the tumor microenvironment and/or metastatic processes.
- Experience with cancer therapeutics, drug development, and/or cancer survivorship research.
- Experience with animal models, including handling mice.
- Experience preparing grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
- Record of scholarly productivity and a track record of publications as demonstrated by application materials.
Job Duties Outlined:
Research & Lab Responsibilities
- Conduct and plan, design, and execute research related to cancer biology, therapeutics, and/or survivorship.
- Analyze, interpret, and manage research data and maintain accurate research records.
- Collaborate with the PI, faculty, and research teams on experimental design, project direction, and interpretation of findings.
- Contribute to research protocols, regulatory documents, and other laboratory activities.
Scholarly Output & Grant Writing
- Prepare manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other scholarly materials for scientific publication and meetings.
- Assist in preparing research proposals and grant applications.
- Disseminate research findings through publications and scientific presentations.
Professional Development
- Participate in seminars, academic activities, and professional development opportunities.
- Develop and follow an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
- Mentor graduate students, undergraduate students, interns, or other trainees, as appropriate.
Compliance
- Maintain accurate research documentation and adhere to IRB, IACUC, data security, laboratory safety, and other applicable policies and requirements. Complete all required departmental and University training and orientation activities.

SalaryCompensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
