Job Duties:

The Police Detective at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh conducts investigations, communicates investigative findings, and testifies in legal and administrative proceedings as needed to support the safety and security of the university community and campus property. The position serves as a liaison between the department and both internal and external stakeholders, fostering collaboration and ensuring effective communication.

  • Conducts criminal investigations to identify perpetrators, preserve the rights of victims, and prevent crime at the institution

  • Serves as an investigator in a specialized unit formed to investigate specific crimes on a continuing basis, i.e. narcotics and gang activity

  • Utilizes analytical techniques to detect and track down criminal activity that takes place in various mediums which may include on digital devices, computers, and the internet

  • Prepares and submits accurate written reports of all investigations conducted in association with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures

  • Testifies in court or administrative proceedings regarding statements and any other facts of information

  • Creates and maintains positive relationships with institutional affiliates, legal entities, social service organizations, civic groups, and the news media

  • Provides uniformed police services at special events

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to police officers in conducting investigations, executing search warrants and subpoenas, and interview and interrogation techniques

Department:

University Police Department

Compensation:

Starting at $38.50 per hour commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification

  • Obtains a valid Driver's License

  • No domestic abuse convictions

  • No felony convictions

  • U.S. Citizen

  • Ability to possess a firearm and any other department-authorized equipment

  • Minimum of 3 years as a sworn State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer

  • Associate's Degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Obtained Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification

  • Completion of advanced investigative and interview/interrogation training, evidence/forensics courses, and sexual assault/trauma-informed interviewing training, and experience putting these trainings into practice

  • Proven experience with campus or community policing, Title IX coordination, or University administrative processes

  • Proficiency with case-management software, records systems, and basic forensic tools

  • Bilingual skills, community-outreach experience, and demonstrated cultural competence

  • Critical thinking, sound decision‑making, and investigative problem solving (ability to gather facts, form hypotheses, and document investigative steps)

  • Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and respect for confidentiality

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multi‑disciplinary responses (medical, counseling, campus conduct, prosecutors) and to develop community partnerships

  • 10 years total law enforcement experience with at least 3 years of investigative or follow-up experience.
