About the Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) and provide leadership across Perioperative Services. As Nurse Unit Manager (NUM), you will oversee the operational and clinical management of the Perioperative Department, including Day Surgery, the four-theatre suite, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), and Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).

This pivotal leadership role will support surgical recovery and service reform initiatives, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

The NUM will play a critical role in ensuring service delivery aligns with contemporary best practice and operates in accordance with ACORN Standards, the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, and AS 5369:2023 standards and guidelines.

Reporting to senior leadership, the Nurse Unit Manager is accountable for the effective management of all departmental resources, including workforce, equipment, budgets, and clinical operations. The role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care while fostering a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, and innovation.

The successful candidate will provide visible leadership, promote strong interdisciplinary collaboration, and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive workplace that reflects Mercy Health's Mission, Values, and strategic priorities.

What you’ll bring

You are a resilient, compassionate, and values-driven healthcare leader with a strong commitment to delivering exceptional patient-centred care. You possess the leadership capability to inspire teams, drive service excellence, and support positive clinical outcomes in a fast-paced perioperative environment.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional clinical knowledge and expertise within the perioperative setting.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, time management, and communication skills, with the ability to adapt, prioritise, and effectively solve complex problems.
  • A compassionate, flexible, and positive approach to patient care, team leadership, and change management.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative and respectful relationships with staff, medical practitioners, and key stakeholders.
  • A commitment to fostering a positive team culture, promoting professional development, and driving continuous quality improvement.
  • Previous management or leadership experience, with a demonstrated commitment to achieving excellence in service delivery and patient outcomes.

You will also be required to provide evidence of, or be in the process of obtaining:

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Perioperative Nursing, Health Services Management, Hospital Administration, Leadership, or a related field (or working towards completion), highly desirable.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of ACORN standards, NSQHS Standards, and AS 5369:2023 requirements.
  • A current National Police Check and Working with Children Check.
  • Evidence of current COVID-19 vaccination, influenza vaccination, and other immunisation requirements in accordance with applicable public health directives and Mercy Health policy.
