Position Summary

The Patient Transporter is responsible for the safe, efficient, and courteous transportation of patients throughout the hospital. This role supports patient care by transporting patients to and from clinical and service areas via wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and other specialized transport equipment. The Patient Transporter also assists with equipment management and maintains a strong commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely transport patients to and from nursing units, treatment areas, testing departments, and other hospital locations.
• Utilize stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and specialized transport vehicles to accommodate patient needs.
• Assist clinical staff with transferring patients to and from transport equipment.
• Respond promptly to transportation requests received through dispatchers and scheduling systems.
• Assist in the care, cleaning, and maintenance of departmental transport equipment.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Participate in departmental meetings, educational programs, and required in-service training.
• Follow all hospital safety policies and procedures and promptly report unsafe conditions or incidents.
• Support a positive patient experience through professional, compassionate, and service-oriented interactions.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
• Ability to safely transport patients and operate transport equipment.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to use smartphones and basic computer applications.

Preferred

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of customer service experience.
• Previous healthcare or hospital experience.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of hospital departments and facility navigation preferred.
• Understanding of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
• Basic proficiency with email, web-based learning platforms, and timekeeping systems.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Ability to build positive relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
• Demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and sensitivity to the needs of others.
• Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
• Strong judgment and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Frequent pushing and pulling of patient transport equipment, often involving considerable weight.
• Repetitive use of hands, wrists, and arms.
• Occasional lifting, lowering, bending, and crouching.
• Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.

• Frequent handwashing and adherence to infection prevention protocols.
• Occasional exposure to cleaning agents.
• Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
• Fast-paced healthcare environment requiring teamwork and flexibility.

This position has a starting rate of $17.80 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $20.90 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $21.93 per hour.

This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
