The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Pediatrics has an exciting opportunity for a full time Nurse Specialist - Pediatric Allergy and Immunology to work in Miami, FL.
The Nurse Specialist - Pediatric Allergy and Immunology delivers patient-family centered care in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service while ensuring population-specific patient care. The incumbent oversees nurses and allied health staff in their daily practice.
Core Job Functions:
- Performs medical tests in patients to diagnose their health condition.
- Interprets laboratory test results of patients.
- Recommends treatment plan for patients based on diagnosis.
- Counsels individuals and patients on positive health practices.
- Provides the latest cost-effective nursing practices. 6. Collaborates with other team of experts to outline best treatment for patients.
- Performs holistic evaluation of specialty population, making use of enhanced proven techniques and procedures to achieve better results.
- Implements the improvement of patient care, and healthcare policies and resources.
- Mentors other healthcare professionals by functioning as a preceptor or coordinating preceptors for visiting professionals, students, new graduates, and orienteers.
- Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions:
Clinical:
- Perform scratch and ID allergy testing and maintaining appropriate testing trays.
- Mixing and administering allergy immunotherapy and managing the strict logging of extract refrigerator temperatures.
- Administration of department specific medications including subcutaneous, IM and IV therapies.
- Assist with procedures in clinic such as food/drug challenges, desensitization, and immunotherapy.
- Recognize and treat with supervision allergic reactions in clinic.
- Perform Pulmonary function testing.
- Manage the logistics of advanced specialty therapeutics. This involves coordinating with pharmacies and patients to execute prior authorizations.
- Coordinates home health care and social services as needed.
- Ordering supplies specific to the clinic
Research:
- Collaborate with research nurse and principal investigators to administer study agents, educate patients and their families about their treatment and protocol requirements. Follow policies and procedures for clinical trials.
- Assists with monitoring therapeutic responses and side effects and obtains pharmacokinetic blood samples and other laboratory specimens as required by each protocol.
Newborn Screen Coordinator:
- Responsible for the tracking and follow-up of the statewide newborn screening program. This role serves as a vital link between birthing facilities, laboratories, private medical providers, specialists, and the Florida Department of Health.
- Coordinate immediate follow-up care, diagnostic testing, and entry into specialized medical care centers for at-risk infants.
- Maintain accurate case files and data systems while ensuring strict health data confidentiality according to DOH standards.
- Counsel and educate families regarding abnormal screening results, next steps, and available state-funded resources.

Core Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required
- Valid State of Florida RN license required
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS and PALS
- Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
- Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
