Position Summary

This is a Hybrid role located in Malahat, BC.

Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Combat Systems Technical Specialist / Life Cycle Materiel Manager (LCMM) to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Naval Combat Systems Technical Specialist / LCMM is responsible for engineering support of Naval Combat Systems including but not limited to:

  • Navigation Systems
  • Communications Systems
  • Command and control systems
  • Data processing systems
  • Above water and underwater sensor systems
  • Ship’s weapons systems and its ammunition

This support consists of planning, overseeing and executing engineering tasks within time and cost constraints to meet the Key Performance Indicators in accordance with Thales quality and commercial guidelines. Accountable to the Engineering Services Manager and working directly with the Naval Combat Systems Engineer and the rest of the Thales Engineering and Supportability Team, this role will support various activities to establish and maintain the configuration and design intent of combat systems on the ship and manage any technical changes.

The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge and expertise in marine communications and naval combat systems and equipment to become a subject matter expert and main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems assigned thereto.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Naval Combat Systems Technical Specialist / LCMM include the following:

  • Developing and reviewing combat system related technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions.
  • Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including but not limited to equipment obsolescence, material compatibility issues, alternate part investigations, and disposal management.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with combat systems, equipment and/or software issues, including root cause analyses, risk assessments and solution development.
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software.
  • Preparing work packages and cost estimates for customer approval.
  • Providing technical advice to ensure equipment and/or systems are correctly operated and/or maintained.
  • Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers and ship staff to support the investigation and resolution of defects.
  • Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of combat systems including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum education requirements:

    3-year technical program diploma (for Technologists) or 2 year technical program diploma (for Technicians) in a marine technical field offered by a recognized technical institute.

    Certified a technologist or technician by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (national) licensing body in a relevant field or certified body.

    Certified as one of the following electrical technical trades of the Canadian Armed Forces:

    QL 6A or 6B Naval Electronics Technician

    QL 6A or 6B Marine Electrician

  • Possess a minimum 5 years of demonstrated professional work experience in the naval, marine, or offshore industry within the last 10 years.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written).
  • Language: English (Essential).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Technical Specialist with marine communications, navigation or naval combat systems.
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
  • Previous experience as an LCMM in the naval combat systems, marine communication or navigation systems field.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets.
  • Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset.

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships.
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $90,000 - $100,000 -$110,000 CAD Annual.

This reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity. Thales may offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by local, state, or federal law.
