About the Role: 

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Clinical Operations the Mental Health Nurse provides care and support to students with mental health concerns. This includes triaging and supporting students in crisis, providing clinical mental health assessments, implementing and evaluating care plans. The Mental Health Nurse will also support the Student Health Services medical clinic as needed.

The Mental Health Nurse will:

• Conduct front-line assessments to identify students’ presenting needs, level of risk, and urgency of care, and determine priority access to Student Health Services (SHS) resources in accordance with applicable legislation, professional standards, SHS policies, and organizational objectives;

• Conduct initial medical assessments to identify physical health conditions that may contribute to, complicate, or impact a student’s mental health presentation;

• Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and provide relevant clinical information for review and follow-up by physicians and psychiatrists;

• Provide timely and compassionate crisis intervention and risk management for students experiencing complex and highly sensitive mental health and wellbeing concerns, including suicidal ideation, depression, abuse, sexual violence, eating disorders, and substance use;

• Serve as a primary point of contact for students experiencing mental health crises, conducting appropriate risk assessments, implementing interventions, coordinating supports, and facilitating referrals to relevant services and resources;

• Provide case management support for students by coordinating communication, facilitating access to appropriate services, and supporting collaboration with campus and community resources;

• Collaborate with psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, counsellors, and appropriate campus and community partners to facilitate treatment and continuity of care, sharing care plans and relevant health information in accordance with applicable privacy and health information legislation and organizational policies;

• Liaise with Student Health Services physicians and relevant campus and community resources to support discharge planning following hospitalization, facilitate communication regarding clinical progress, develop transition strategies, and promote continuity of care;

• Coordinate access to appropriate accommodations, emergency supports, and community resources, including assistance with emergency funding or temporary housing when a student’s circumstances create an immediate risk to their safety or wellbeing;

• Maintain comprehensive, accurate, and confidential health records in accordance with applicable privacy legislation, including the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and university policies and procedures;

• Participate in multidisciplinary consultation and case review meetings with physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals to discuss patient history, clinical needs, treatment options, risk management, and outcomes;

• Act as a liaison between healthcare providers and students, providing clear information, education, and instructions regarding treatment plans, follow-up care, referrals, and available supports;

• Coordinate and support students’ return to academic and campus life following a mental health crisis, hospitalization, or period of absence, including facilitating communication with appropriate supports and healthcare providers and ensuring relevant documentation, recommendations, and expectations are in place; and

• Provide backup support to Student Health Services floor nurses, assisting with clinical needs and supporting General Practitioners (GPs) in the assessment, coordination, and delivery of student care as required.

Key Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing with Mental Health Certification and/or equivalent combination of education and experience; 

• Current registration as a RN and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO);

• Annual CPR certification;

• Recent related mental health experience with community mental health experience preferred;

• Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the diverse cultural and co-morbid health issues common to our patient demographic;

• Familiarity with the Mental Health Act and its implications for both patients and providers;

• Proficiency in clinical nursing interventions and procedures within the scope of practice of a registered Nurse and mental health appropriate to our care setting;

• Experience triaging psychiatric and mental health disorders, and crisis/trauma counselling;

• Knowledge and proficiency in general nursing procedures and skills, interventions and management practices particular to the needs of our patients including, knowledge of commonly prescribed medications;

• Excellent problem solving and critical thinking techniques, leadership and resource management;

• Excellent organizational skills to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines, while maintaining focus on quality service; and

• The ability to work effectively in an environment with sensitive and confidential information and situations.

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

• Completion of an advanced diploma or certification in psychiatric nursing or equivalent combination of training and experience an asset

Salary and Total Rewards: 

• Job Grade M, Salary Scale ($74,235- $118,776)

• Target Hiring Range: $74,235  -  $78,000*
