About the Position

The Materials Testing Technician performs a variety of entry-level quality-assurance testing of construction materials used in transportation projects. Working primarily in a laboratory environment with field testing as needed, the Technician assists with materials testing, inspections, and data collection to support roadway and bridge construction and maintenance. This position follows established procedures, standards, and specifications to help ensure the quality and performance of materials. The Technician may also participate in internal materials evaluations and investigations, including the use of new equipment, emerging technologies, and innovative materials and treatments. This role offers hands-on experience with advanced and emerging materials testing and nondestructive evaluation technologies.

We Require

• Two years of experience working in a construction materials laboratory, or other related testing experience

• High school diploma or GED

• Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

• Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire and have an acceptable driving record 

• Must possess ATTI Soils & Aggregate certification or have the ability to obtain within six months of the hire date

• Must possess ACI Strength certification or have the ability to obtain within twelve months of the hire date

• Must possess ATTI Asphalt, ATTI Field, and Nuclear Gauge & Radiation Safety certifications or have the ability to obtain within eighteen months of the hire date

• Must possess ACI Field certification or have the ability to obtain within twenty-four months of the hire date

We Also Value

NICET certification: Level I/II Construction Materials Testing/Highway Construction.

Job Contributions

• Perform laboratory testing of construction materials used in assigned projects

• Perform field inspections and testing to ensure compliance with material specifications and construction methods

• Perform inspections of vendor/supplier facilities, equipment, and manufacturing processes

• Participate in proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections conducted by national certifying agencies

• Complete and report test results of assigned special research projects in accordance with instructions specified by the requester or the laboratory supervisor

• Prepare and submit inspection reports, test results, and summaries for review

• Perform maintenance, calibration, and verification of laboratory and field-testing equipment

• Participate in training and assist in training new Materials Testing Technicians

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Working Conditions

• This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer-facing for all hours worked

• Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly

• The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware

Light trucks; coring rigs; laboratory and field-testing equipment for soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete; heating and burn-off ovens; standard hand and power tools, including pliers, screwdrivers, cutting tools, and diamond saws; and advanced and emerging materials testing and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies. Software includes Microsoft Office, Workday, temperature-logging applications, Asphalt Institute R18 LabQMS, and specialized software for operating, controlling, and processing data from testing equipment. Hardware includes computers, monitors, data acquisition devices, and associated computer peripherals.

Protective Equipment Required

Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times while performing laboratory or field duties. This typically includes safety glasses, high-visibility vests, steel-toed boots, gloves, and hearing protection as needed. In some cases, additional protection such as hard hats, dust masks or respirators, and lab coats or coveralls may be required depending on the task and exposure to chemicals, dust, or high temperatures.
