About the role
The Energy Markets & Treasury Risk (EMTR) team provides independent oversight of risks arising from AGL's trading and treasury activities. The team challenges risk-taking activities, monitors adherence to approved policies and limits, and supports effective risk governance across the organisation.
The Market Risk Analyst supports independent oversight and analysis for a defined commodity or treasury portfolio and contributes to the effective operation of AGL's market and treasury risk management framework. The role covers electricity, gas, environmental products, foreign exchange, interest rate, liquidity and funding risks, and engages with stakeholders across Wholesale Markets, Treasury, Finance and Technology.
This will be a 12 month maximum term role, based in Melbourne.
What You’ll Be Doing
• Provide independent oversight and analysis of risk exposures for a defined commodity or treasury portfolio, supporting compliance with approved policies, limits and risk appetite.
• Monitor trading, treasury and commercial activities, identify material and emerging risks, and provide clear, evidence-based analysis and timely escalation.
• Support investigations into policy breaches, control failures and risk events, including remediation tracking and assessment of control effectiveness.
• Support the development and ongoing enhancement of market and treasury risk frameworks, methodologies and governance arrangements.
• Develop, maintain and validate risk metrics, valuation tools, stress testing and scenario analysis, and oversee key market and valuation data inputs.
• Prepare risk analysis, insights and reporting for governance forums, and perform key controls supporting risk measurement, valuation governance, liquidity analysis and risk monitoring.
• Support internal audit, external audit and regulatory reviews relating to market and treasury risk frameworks.
• Build effective stakeholder relationships while maintaining independence and constructive challenge, translating technical analysis into clear business implications and contributing to data quality, automation and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Bring
• Experience in market risk, treasury, financial markets, commodities, banking, corporate finance, quantitative analysis or a related analytical discipline.
• Understanding of trading or treasury risk frameworks, governance arrangements and risk control environments.
• Strong quantitative and analytical capability, with experience applying statistical or mathematical techniques to risk, valuation, forecasting or financial analysis.
• Understanding of financial instruments and risk concepts. Exposure to commodity, foreign exchange, interest rate, liquidity or funding risk is advantageous, but specialist knowledge across all areas is not required.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a disciplined approach to controls, documentation and data quality.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risk concepts and analysis to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work collaboratively across Wholesale Markets, Treasury, Finance, Risk and Technology while exercising sound judgement and constructive challenge.
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills and the ability to work with large datasets.
• Experience with Power BI, SQL, Python, Databricks or similar tools would be advantageous.
• Tertiary qualifications in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, actuarial studies, engineering, accounting, commerce or a related discipline.
