POSITION SUMMARY:

The Maintenance Technician 2 supports the Facilities and Maintenance Department by maintaining HVAC systems, kitchen equipment, and campus buildings and infrastructure at Harvey Mudd College. Reporting to the Plant Engineer and Director of Maintenance, this role works collaboratively with other maintenance technicians to ensure the reliable operation and upkeep of campus facilities.

The position is responsible for responding to service requests from students, faculty, and staff, addressing maintenance needs across classrooms, laboratories, offices, and residential spaces. Duties include performing repairs and maintenance on HVAC systems, kitchen equipment, plumbing fixtures, electrical devices, and related building systems, as appropriate.

While performing work across campus, the Maintenance Technician 2 is expected to independently assess issues, diagnose problems, and complete repairs effectively and efficiently. The role also involves coordinating and facilitating work that requires specialized skills, ensuring proper tracking, follow-up, and resolution. In addition, the technician observes campus conditions and identifies opportunities for practical, cost-effective improvements to enhance the functionality and appearance of facilities.

This position requires adherence to all institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards, while also contributing to the planning and implementation of staff training initiatives to support continuous improvement within the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including but not limited to air handlers, water source heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, A/C package units, variable air volume boxes, commercial refrigerators, etc.

  • Effectively maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of commercial kitchen equipment, including—but not limited to—walk-in refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, steamers, ovens, and related systems, ensuring reliable performance, operational safety, and minimal disruption to campus dining operations.

  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on electrical systems including changing out breakers, performing maintenance on VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) and emergency lighting systems.

  • Utilizes CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to manage work orders and track work order completion.

  • Maintain the building's lighting systems, including element and ballast repairs or replacements.

  • Perform assigned facility inspections and due diligence efforts, reporting on conditions impacting satisfactory client occupancy and operations.

  • Assist in inspecting buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to the Plant Engineer and Director of Maintenance.

  • Assist as required and cooperate with all trades personnel, building attendants, and grounds and maintenance staff in the performance of day to day duties and responsibilities. 

  • Ensure work is performed according to manufacturer's specifications, departmental guidelines, trade practices, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.

  • Inspect areas assigned to maintenance staff and provide assistance/guidance, as required.

  • Assist in addressing concerns of students, faculty, staff and visitors regarding maintenance services.

  • Participate in utility conservation efforts. Make recommendations for improvement.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety and Work Habits

  • Maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meeting deadlines.

  • Ensure compliance with all safety rules and regulations by consistently modeling and adhering to proper practices, including the use of personal protective equipment, safe operation of power tools, and appropriate handling of cleaning agents and chemical compounds, while reinforcing these standards among maintenance team members to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.

  • Maintain a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at HMC such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc.

  • Follow established procedures for dealing with potential hazards.

  • Promptly report accidents on the job, assist in preparation and submission of accident reports for the Maintenance Department.

Required Qualifications

  • Licenses: EPA Universal Refrigerants 

  • Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Education: High school diploma or GED, Trade or technical school diploma or degree.

  • Experience: Minimum of three years’ experience in a position of similar responsibility. 
     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical and other building trades and the ability to properly assess the quality of work being performed in these trades.

  • Must possess knowledge and technical skills required for the repair and maintenance of plumbing, heating and electrical systems, fixtures, devices and applications.

  • Ability to assess equipment and system problems, conduct appropriate research, draw conclusions and recommend or take action to resolve problems in a timely manner.

  • Experience with central plants equipment (boilers, chillers, cooling towers, hydronic systems, standby generators, ATS gear, pumps, lift stations).

  • Experience with CMMS platforms (i.e. Maximo, Maintenance Connection, Asset Essentials, SAP, etc.).

  • Must possess organizational skills and effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals and equipment used in maintaining various equipment and systems on campus.

  • Ability to work productively, make sound decisions and effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a logical progression.

  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments. 

  • Ability to effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups. 

  • Personal integrity and ability to interact and work successfully with individuals with varying abilities, backgrounds, interests and beliefs.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written English.

  • Ability to understand college policies and procedures as related to the position. 

  • Ability to observe and practice safe working habits and maintain security of buildings and systems. 

  • Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies.

  • Ability to work in laboratories where animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to the view of the worker. 

  • Must be willing and able to work occasional weekends, evenings or holidays as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred

  • NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Training 

  • PPE Training 

Remote Work Eligibility:

Category A:

All staff positions, regardless of remote work eligibility, require an initial 30-calendar-day on-campus work period. Based on an evaluation by the supervisor and area Vice President, this position is classified as Category A as defined in the College’s Remote Work Policy, without occasional ad-hoc remote work flexibility. Your position is essential to on-campus operations and requires you to work exclusively on campus 

Your standard working hours will generally be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, though these hours may vary depending on departmental and College needs, 

All remote work arrangements, including ad-hoc remote work, must be approved by the direct supervisor, area Cabinet member, and Human Resources, and are subject to periodic review based on institutional needs. These arrangements are neither guaranteed nor considered entitlements and may change due to factors such as employee performance, evolving business needs, or changes to the position.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Hours:

Regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, days and hours may vary due to the needs of the department or the College.

Classification

This is an non-exempt, full-time, regular, benefits eligible position. 
 

Salary

$32 - $36 an hour. ( This range is inclusive of a $2 per hour differential for the expectation that this position supports unrestricted on-call needs. The college reserves the right to modify this arrangement prospectively including the differential amount based upon business needs.)
 

Reports To

This position reports to the Plant Engineer and Director of Maintenance
