In our highly adaptable building on Manhattan’s west side, The Shed brings together established and emerging artists to create new work in fields ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. We seek opportunities to collaborate with cultural peers and community organizations, work with like-minded partners, and provide unique spaces for private events. As an independent non-profit that values invention, equity, and generosity, we are committed to advancing art forms, addressing the urgent issues of our time, and making our work impactful, sustainable, and relevant to the local community, the cultural sector, New York City, and beyond.

About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Technology, the IT Manager is a senior technical member of the Technology team, with the Help Desk role reporting into this position. The IT Manager owns the organization's network and infrastructure—wired, wireless, identity, and security—and serves as the primary technical point of contact for the building's event and production activity, coordinating with rental clients, in-house productions, and Facilities, Security, and Production teams to ensure network and hardware support is in place for every event.
The IT Manager also manages relationships with The Shed's core network vendors (WOD for wired network maintenance, Commscope for WiFi), oversees endpoint and server health, and is the first responder for infrastructure incidents.

Key responsibilities include:

Team Leadership

  • Manage the Help Desk role, including day-to-day support workflow and escalation
  • As a senior technical resource, help provide coverage on other Technology team members' tasks during absences or vacations as needed
  • Help communicate and support organizational technology best practices and guidance

Event & Production Network Support

  • Meet with rental event clients to assess network needs and hardware they'll bring into the building, ensuring the team can support them during the event
  • Perform the same needs assessment for in-house productions (performing arts, visual arts, and other core programming)
  • Support Production's audio, lighting, and visual systems where they depend on network and server rack infrastructure or system integration touchpoints
  • Consult on and support fiber and broadband needs for events involving streaming or video broadcast
  • Maintain working knowledge of union jurisdiction boundaries (e.g., where IT may run cable directly vs. where union labor must execute to IT specifications)

Network & Security Administration

  • Work closely with Facilities and Security, whose communication systems depend on the network
  • Serve as primary liaison to WOD (wired network maintenance) and Commscope (WiFi maintenance/support)
  • Administer and troubleshoot Cisco switches, VLANs, and 802.1x (Cisco ISE)
  • Maintain wireless access points (with Commscope)
  • Configure and troubleshoot firewall (SonicWall)
  • Manage Cisco Umbrella and Taegis for network/endpoint security
  • Provision network access: create SSIDs for events, enable/disable hardline port access
  • Maintain internal DNS
  • Procure and manage domain certificates for internal systems
  • Update or replace fiber and ethernet runs as needed

Server & Identity Administration

  • Administer AD/Entra infrastructure
  • Support SSO/SAML integration for applications connecting to identity infrastructure
  • Support core infrastructure: UPS systems, firewalls, Hyper-V instances, ISE servers
  • Configure/oversee system backups, including monitoring for successful completion and escalating failures
  • Administer print servers; deploy and install printers/copiers

Endpoint, Device & Software Management

  • Conduct initial health analysis of laptops, desktops, and servers; oversee repair of non-working systems
  • Own monthly "Patch Mondays" for reviewing machines and applying patches
  • Roll out firmware updates and software patches as vendors/manufacturers release them
  • Oversee MDM systems (Intune, Jamf, Hexnode), including device deployment/imaging via Intune
  • Work with staff to identify the hardware that best meets their needs; aid in speccing, procurement, and deployment
  • Maintain hardware inventory records; help inform capital replacement planning
  • Co-manage 1Password administration, Duo administration, and Google Workspace configuration/accounts
  • Configure/oversee backups for Google Workspace and OneDrive data

Incident Response

  • Serve as first point of contact for server/network outages
  • Monitor and respond to urgent tickets in Zendesk

Qualifications and Qualities

  • Strong knowledge of Cisco networking (switches, ISE, 802.1x), SonicWall firewall, and Cisco Umbrella
  • Experience with AD/Entra, Duo, and Google Workspace identity sync
  • Working knowledge of SSO/SAML integration
  • Familiarity with Intune, Jamf, and Hexnode for MDM/device deployment
  • Experience with Taegis or comparable endpoint/network security tooling
  • Familiarity with Auvik or comparable network monitoring/management tooling is helpful
  • Knowledge of Hyper-V virtualization and Windows/macOS/Linux environments
  • Familiarity with distributed software applications, sufficient to understand how underlying network and infrastructure systems support them
  • Comfort working in a union-labor building environment, understanding jurisdictional boundaries
  • Strong communication skills for direct client- and production-facing coordination; comfortable interacting with nontechnical staff and excels at customer service-oriented interactions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage vendor relationships and a direct report

Schedule

Standard hours are weekdays, between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm. Given the nature of the building's event and production activity, some evening and weekend availability is required to support events, emergencies, and select maintenance activities.
