Project Title
Mechanical Hot-Plug Automation Solution for Solid-State Drive Validation
Project Description
Solid-state drive hot-plug capability enables a storage device to be connected to or disconnected from an operating server system. Evaluating this capability is an important part of understanding solid-state drive reliability and system behavior.
This engineering internship project is intended to provide the intern with practical exposure to solid-state drive technology, server hardware, mechanical design, microcontroller integration, and test automation. The intern will develop and evaluate a mechanical automation solution that can perform controlled and repeatable hot-plug actions for multiple devices under test within an enterprise server environment.
Through a structured project plan and technical guidance from engineers, the intern will apply engineering principles to progress from requirements definition and concept development to prototype integration, verification, and technical documentation. The project is developmental and project-based and is not intended to replace routine validation activities performed by regular employees.
Objective of the Project
The objective is to design and demonstrate a cost-effective mechanical automation solution that enables controlled, repeatable, and systematic hot-plug testing of multiple solid-state drives within the same enterprise server.
The project is also intended to strengthen the intern’s understanding of how mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software elements are integrated into an engineering validation solution.
Opportunities for Full-Time Employment
Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern may be considered for relevant full-time employment opportunities based on business requirements, position availability, academic completion, and overall suitability.
Project Scope
- Study solid-state drive fundamentals, hot-plug functionality, enterprise server architecture, and relevant validation principles.
- Define the functional, mechanical, electrical, and safety requirements for the proposed automation solution.
- Design and develop a mechanical fixture and actuator mechanism for controlled hot-plug insertion and removal.
- Integrate a microcontroller with the actuator mechanism and develop Python or shell-script-based automation.
- Conduct planned engineering evaluations to assess repeatability, device coverage, integration behavior, and solution limitations.
Learning Opportunities
- Gain practical knowledge of solid-state drive technology, hot-plug functionality, and server-level validation methodology.
- Apply mechanical or mechatronic design principles to fixture design, actuator selection, and system integration.
- Develop experience in microcontroller programming, scripting, hardware-software integration, and structured troubleshooting.
- Learn how to plan engineering evaluations, analyze results, document findings, and communicate technical recommendations.
Deliverables
- A documented mechanical design, including the fixture concept, actuator arrangement, component selection, and design considerations.
- An integrated prototype capable of performing controlled hot-plug actions on multiple devices under test.
- Automation scripts and microcontroller logic for configuring and executing planned hot-plug test sequences.
- A technical report and final presentation covering the design approach, evaluation results, identified limitations, and recommendations for future development.
Impact of the Project
- Establish a proof of concept for repeatable mechanical hot-plug automation within an enterprise server environment.
- Increase the consistency and coverage of engineering evaluations involving multiple solid-state drives.
- Provide a technical foundation that engineers may further evaluate for future validation applications.
Skillsets Required
- Fundamental knowledge of computer hardware, electronics, mechanical systems, or mechatronic systems.
- Basic programming experience in Python, shell scripting, microcontroller programming, or a comparable language.
- Analytical problem-solving skills with an interest in hardware-software integration and failure analysis.
- Ability to interpret technical data, document engineering findings, and communicate project outcomes clearly.
- Familiarity with Micron-authorized AI-enabled tools for activities such as code review, log exploration, result summarization, or documentation is beneficial but not essential.
Course of Interest
The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Duration of Period
The ideal candidate should be able to commit to a full-time internship period of at least 5 months, preferably from January to May 2027.
