Instrument & Controls Technician

Location: Blanchardstown, Dublin

Duration: Permanent

Hours: 39 Hours per week

Overview of the role; 

The Instrumentation & Controls Technician will work alongside Utilities Technicians to support the safe, compliant and reliable operation of site utilities, HVAC systems, building management systems and associated control equipment within a regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The role is responsible for planned and corrective maintenance, calibration, fault-finding, repair, testing and continuous improvement of instrumentation and control assets, with particular emphasis on Siemens control systems and ABB variable speed drives.

Day to Day of the role; 

• Perform planned preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, calibration, inspection and repair of instrumentation and control systems supporting utilities and production operations.
• Work alongside Utilities Technicians during routine operations, planned maintenance, breakdown response and technical fault-finding across clean utilities, black utilities and HVAC systems.
• Diagnose and resolve faults on HVAC control systems, including air-handling units, supply and extract fans, pumps, valves, actuators, dampers, pressure controls, temperature controls and associated field devices.
• Monitor, interrogate and fault-find Siemens building management and control systems, including controllers, input/output signals, alarms, trends, interlocks and communications.
• Maintain, configure and troubleshoot ABB variable speed drives used on fans, pumps and other rotating equipment.
• Calibrate and verify transmitters, sensors, switches and indicators for pressure, differential pressure, flow, temperature, level and other critical parameters.
• Test control loops, sequences, alarms, permissives and safety interlocks following maintenance, repair or modification.
• Use electrical drawings, control schematics, loop diagrams, P&IDs, equipment manuals and BMS graphics to support effective fault diagnosis.
• Support installation, commissioning, qualification and handover of new or modified instrumentation, control and HVAC systems.
• Use the site Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) proficiently to review, prioritise, update and close work orders; record labour, materials, fault findings and corrective actions; manage planned preventive maintenance tasks; and maintain accurate, GMP-compliant equipment history.
• Identify recurring equipment failures and contribute to root-cause analysis, reliability improvements, energy-efficiency initiatives and defect elimination.
• Coordinate safely with utilities, engineering, operations, quality, contractors, vendors and specialist service providers.
• Maintain critical spares and communicate equipment status, operational risks and required follow-up actions 

Requirements for the role; 

• Recognised trade qualification in Instrumentation, Electrical Instrumentation, Electrical or a closely related discipline
• Minimum of three years’ relevant post-qualification experience in an instrumentation, controls or maintenance technician role.
• Demonstrated experience working in a pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical or similarly regulated manufacturing environment.
• Practical HVAC fault-finding experience across mechanical plant and associated instrumentation and controls.
• Hands-on BMS experience, particularly Siemens control systems.
• Hands-on experience fault-finding, maintaining and configuring ABB variable speed drives.
• Experience with Siemens BMS engineering tools, controller diagnostics, trend analysis or graphics.
• Experience with HVAC commissioning, balancing, control-sequence testing or energy optimization.
• Knowledge of clean and black utility systems within a pharmaceutical facility.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems, calibration management and controlled technical documentation.
• Training in electrical safety, permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, confined spaces or other relevant site safety programmes..
• Strong knowledge of instrumentation principles, control loops, digital and analogue signals, alarms, interlocks and field-device diagnostics.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, P&IDs and technical manuals.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) within a maintenance environment, including work-order processing, preventive maintenance scheduling, asset records, materials usage, maintenance history and report retrieval.
• Carry out all work in accordance with site procedures, GMP requirements, permit-to-work controls, lockout/tagout requirements and applicable health, safety and environmental standards.
• Ensure maintenance and calibration activities are accurately documented, traceable and completed using approved procedures and calibrated test equipment.
• Maintain the validated state of systems by following change control, deviation and quality approval requirements where applicable.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, critical alarms, environmental risks and any activity that may affect product quality or utility reliability.
• Support audits, inspections, investigations and corrective and preventive actions by providing accurate technical information and maintenance evidence.
• Systematic and safety-focused approach to technical fault-finding.
• Strong practical problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Good written and verbal communication, including clear maintenance notes and shift pass downs.
• Ability to prioritise urgent faults while managing planned maintenance commitments.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-skilled utilities team.
• High attention to detail, documentation accuracy and procedural compliance.
• Proactive approach to reliability, continuous improvement and customer service.
