The Opportunity

USAA's Collaboration & Productivity Engineering team is seeking a Lead Exchange & Productivity Services Engineer to provide technical leadership for our Microsoft Exchange and Productivity Services platforms. This role is responsible for the architecture, engineering, operational support, and strategic direction of Exchange Online, Outlook, Office applications, Microsoft 365 productivity services, and related collaboration technologies.

The selected candidate will serve as a technical leader and mentor responsible for the design, implementation, operational support, and end-user support of USAA's Microsoft Exchange and Productivity Services platforms. This individual will establish engineering standards, lead complex technical initiatives, develop and maintain architectural documentation and operational runbooks, and partner across Infrastructure, Security, Networking, Identity, Compliance, Risk, and End User Computing teams to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable collaboration services. The role will assist with compliance, governance, audit, regulatory, and data protection activities related to Microsoft 365 services, while helping ensure platform configurations align with enterprise security and compliance requirements. The selected candidate will provide technical leadership, develop engineering talent, participate in on-call rotations and major incident response, and help shape the future strategy and architecture of Microsoft 365 productivity capabilities across the enterprise.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, or Plano, TX. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

What you'll do:

• As a subject matter expert guides team in the design of highly complex, scalable IT systems infrastructure; creates and enforces standards for system change; manages execution for the most complex implementations, ensures service delivery and maintenance tasks are appropriately automated, and Influences and guides monitoring, observability, and tooling activities.
• Leads resolution of the most complex production issues and guides troubleshooting of end-to-end solutions that span multiple systems.
• Provides real-time complex trouble-shooting support for major incidents.
• Work side by side with lead Architecture to establish tech requirements and perform lab testing / data results gathering for tech decisions.
• Identify and implement process improvements; Expert understanding of IT infrastructure management and automating service delivery best practices.
• Collaborates with stakeholders to evaluate and share information about the customer issues and the identification of solutions Provides internal team leadership by mentoring engineers, coaching engineers on design, development, and maintenance of systems and tools, techniques and processes.
• Prioritizes, assigns, and monitors work assignments under the direction of management.
• Actively participates in industry, COE, or other discipline-relevant groups/panels to keep abreast of industry trends and share best practices with team.
• Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

• 8 years of infrastructure engineering experience demonstrating deep technical expertise within a specific technology domain, including 5+ years administering and supporting Microsoft Exchange Online and hybrid Exchange environments within a large enterprise.

• 2 years of technical leadership experience, including mentoring, coaching, and providing technical guidance to engineering teams.

• Advanced troubleshooting experience resolving complex issues across Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, networking, identity, security, and endpoint technologies.

• Experience designing, implementing, supporting, and maintaining highly available, secure, and scalable enterprise infrastructure solutions.

• Strong understanding of messaging architecture, including mail flow, SMTP, DNS, email routing, and Exchange service dependencies.

• Knowledge of infrastructure design principles, automation, system integration, and scalable service delivery.

• Experience working with cloud-based technologies and services.

• Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with business leaders, engineering teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

What sets you apart:

• Microsoft 365 Messaging Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert, or equivalent Microsoft certifications.

• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise Microsoft 365 environments.

• Experience leading Exchange Online migrations, modernization initiatives, or enterprise transformation efforts.

• Experience supporting Microsoft Teams and its integration with Exchange Online, including calendaring, scheduling, and collaboration services.

• Experience serving as a technical lead, lead engineer, or subject matter expert for enterprise messaging platforms.

• Experience building PowerShell automation and operational efficiencies to reduce manual support activities.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Defender, retention, compliance, and governance solutions.

• Experience operating within highly regulated environments with strong security, compliance, and audit requirements.

• Familiarity with ITIL practices including Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, and Major Incident Response.

• Experience working directly with Microsoft and third-party vendors to resolve complex technical issues.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $127,310.00 - $243,340.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
