We’re recruiting an industrial hygiene supervisor to join our safety and health specialty services team. The person in this role will supervise the operations and deliverables of the industrial hygiene team, including developing and leading team members with varying backgrounds and skill levels. 

This role requires technical expertise, leadership skills, and a strong sense of purpose. You’ll lead the direction of a highly skilled professional team, support growth, and develop employees who care about making a difference. You’ll also help shape the safety and health outcomes of businesses across the state of Oregon.

The industrial hygiene supervisor will have an opportunity to provide input and influence the shaping of this newly formed team. They’ll partner closely with the director of safety and health specialty services to execute and inform the vision and strategy for the team. 

Our ideal candidate will have seven or more years of increasingly progressive responsibilities in industrial hygiene. You’ll need demonstrated success in leading and coaching employees, while providing industrial hygiene services to a diverse array of workplaces with varying types of environmental and occupational hazards.

Responsibilities

• Set clear direction and objectives that are aligned with SAIF’s vision and mission. Drive employee engagement and team effectiveness through effective communication and by creating and maintaining an environment where individuals are empowered, motivated, and where the importance of collaboration within and across divisions / teams is fully understood and encouraged. Recognize individual differences while focusing on team cohesion. Develop and sustain an inclusive collaborative team environment to support diverse team members throughout the division.
• Ensure consistent and transparent execution of industrial hygiene services and operations in alignment with the Specialty Consultant Services team and Safety and Health Division
• Assess customer needs and referrals, assigning work based on expertise, capacity, and business priorities.
• Monitor workload distribution, service quality, productivity, and customer outcomes, adjusting resources as needed to meet organizational objectives.
• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of industrial hygiene best practices.
• Serve as the division’s central point of contact for industrial hygiene subject matters and support the development of team members.
• Provide oversight and quality assurance for industrial hygiene evaluations, occupational disease investigations, exposure assessments, and technical reports, ensuring sound findings and practical control recommendations.
• Provide leadership and technical direction to SAIF’s industrial hygiene team, including developing technical expertise.
• Hire, onboard, develop, and manage staff of technical professionals; address performance and behavioral concerns in partnership with Human Resources.
• Oversee outsourced industrial hygiene services, including negotiating and administering laboratory and consulting contracts.
• Prepare and deliver program updates, operational reports, and strategic input to the Director of Specialty Services and others as needed.
• Prepare and manage the team’s operational budget, monitoring expenditures and addressing variances while maintaining service excellence.
• Collaborate with Other States Coverage (OSC) Manager to provide industrial hygiene services when needed to out of state policyholders.
• Collaborate with Safety & Health Consultant Supervisors and other leaders across SAIF.
• Provide expert consultation to internal stakeholders and legal counsel on industrial hygiene matters.
• Serve as an expert witness and provide testimony at hearings when required.
• Build a team culture in which differences are embraced. Regularly expose team members to diverse perspectives and leverage differences to strengthen workgroup performance.
• Model adaptability and consistently seek to understand other world views, perspectives, and approaches to work.
• This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy.

The following qualifications are recommended:

• Seven or more years of progressively responsible industrial hygiene experience with demonstrated skill leading and coaching employees.
• Experience providing industrial hygiene services to a variety of policyholders in a workers’ compensation, other insurance environment or a diverse array of clients and customer base with varying types of environmental and occupational hazards.
• A bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene or a related science.
• Professional designation as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is required.
• A master’s degree in industrial hygiene can be substituted for the initial requirements of a CIH if CIH designation is obtained within one year of hire.
• Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.
