Position Summary:
Responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting a wide range of HVAC equipment, including heating and cooling systems, ventilation units, and refrigeration units. The HVAC Installation/Repair Technician performs regular inspections, conducts preventive maintenance, and responds to emergency service calls- to ensure optimal indoor air quality, temperature control, and energy efficiency.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Experience in HVAC maintenance, repair, and construction.
• Experienced in the use of hand and power tools, gauges, and equipment used in HVAC maintenance and repair.
• EPA Universal Refrigerant License.
• Valid Driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
• Ability to troubleshoot, test, diagnose, and repair HVAC equipment.
• Ability to interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications.
• Ability to climb ladders.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of HVAC construction methods and codes.

Preferred Qualifications:

• VA Mechanical Trades License.
• Experience using Building Automation System (BAS) software.
• Familiarity with scientific lab and/or commercial systems & appliances (fume hoods, R/O & D/I water treatment systems, vacuum systems, autoclaves, etc.).

Conditions of Employment:

• This position has been designated as essential to the operation of the department, will require reporting to work when the University is officially closed.
• Incumbents will be required to participate in the Facilities Management “on-call” program and duties will include on-call/standby on a rotating basis.
• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Job Duties:
40% - HVAC Systems Repair, Maintenance, and Alterations:

• Ensures that assigned repairs of HVAC equipment, including heating and cooling systems, ventilation units, and refrigeration units, are completed to the highest standards of professionalism.
• Confirms that repairs and maintenance are completed according to the Code.
• Makes sure that alterations are only accomplished after a building permit is approved as needed.
• Provides timely feedback to the supervisor on required repairs and the status of equipment.
• Responds to emergency service calls to ensure optimal indoor air quality, temperature control, and energy efficiency.

40% - HVAC Preventive Maintenance:

• Ensures preventive maintenance (PM) on assigned HVAC equipment is performed as scheduled and is properly documented.
• Ensures corrective actions discovered as part of the PM inspections are properly documented in the work order system.
• Confirms that workspaces are maintained in a clean and neat condition.

15% - Work Administration:

• Ensures work order documentation and customer response cards are completed and submitted in a timely manner.
• Takes corrective action as required on work orders with minimal call-backs.
• Consistently advises supervisor of required follow-up actions

5% - Other Duties:

• Other duties as assigned are conducted in an expeditious and professional manner.
