As part of our continued commitment to HSE performance, we are looking for an HSE Officer with a strong focus on environmental management to join our HSE team.

The role 

As an HSE Officer, you will support the implementation and continuous improvement of Health, Safety and Environmental programs at Damen Song Cam Shipyard, with particular responsibility for environmental management.

Your work will focus on environmental compliance, waste management, environmental monitoring, wastewater treatment, chemical management, resource consumption and environmental awareness. You will also contribute to occupational health and safety activities, HSE audits, risk assessments and incident investigations.

Key responsibilities: 

As an HSE Officer, your main responsibilities are:

• Environmental Management & Compliance
  • Implement and monitor environmental protection measures in accordance with company requirements and applicable legislation.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental requirements and management-system standards, including ISO 14001.
  • Conduct routine environmental inspections across the shipyard and follow up identified deviations.
  • Support environmental assessments, risk evaluations and mitigation plans.
  • Monitor changes in applicable environmental and OHS requirements and support their implementation within the organization.

• Waste Management

  • Monitor the segregation, collection, storage and disposal of solid, hazardous and domestic waste.
  • Maintain accurate waste inventories, collection records and disposal documentation.
  • Coordinate with authorized waste-management contractors to ensure waste is handled and disposed of safely and in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve waste reduction, segregation and recycling practices.

• Environmental Monitoring

  • Coordinate and monitor air, water and noise measurements in accordance with established environmental monitoring plans.
  • Track environmental indicators and identify deviations requiring corrective action.
  • Prepare environmental monitoring records and reports.
  • Ensure environmental monitoring equipment is appropriately maintained and calibrated where applicable.

• Energy & Resource Consumption

  • Collect, consolidate and analyze data relating to electricity, fuel and water consumption.
  • Monitor resource-consumption trends and identify potential improvement opportunities.
  • Recommend and promote practical energy- and resource-saving measures.
  • Support energy audits and environmental-efficiency improvement initiatives.

• Wastewater Management

  • Monitor the operation and environmental performance of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Coordinate wastewater sampling and testing and maintain proper records of results.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable discharge requirements.
  • Follow up maintenance and corrective actions required to ensure reliable operation of treatment facilities.

• Chemical Management

  • Maintain and monitor the company's chemical inventory.
  • Ensure chemicals are properly identified, labelled, stored and handled in accordance with applicable safety requirements and Safety Data Sheets.
  • Monitor chemical usage and promote safe and environmentally responsible handling practices.
  • Support chemical spill-prevention and emergency-response arrangements.
  • Participate in emergency drills involving chemical or environmental incidents.

• HSE Compliance, Reporting & Audits

  • Support compliance with applicable environmental and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Prepare required environmental records, statistics and compliance reports.
  • Coordinate with third-party auditors and government authorities during environmental inspections and audits.
  • Participate in internal and external HSE audits and follow up corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation to demonstrate HSE and environmental compliance.

• Training & Environmental Awareness

  • Conduct environmental awareness sessions and relevant HSE training for employees and contractors.
  • Promote responsible environmental practices throughout daily shipyard operations.
  • Support HSE campaigns and initiatives aimed at strengthening employee awareness and environmental responsibility.

• General HSE Support

  • Participate in HSE risk assessments and workplace inspections.
  • Support investigations of environmental incidents, spills and safety-related events.
  • Assist with root-cause identification and follow up corrective and preventive actions.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of the overall HSE management system.

Skills & experience 

To be successful in this role, you bring: 

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or another relevant discipline.

Experience

• Approximately 2 to 4 years of relevant HSE experience, preferably with a strong environmental focus.
• Practical exposure to environmental compliance, monitoring, waste management, chemical management or similar activities is preferred.
• Familiarity with environmental legislation and international management-system standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
• Knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment and environmental-data analysis.
