We’re looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Advisor to support the HSE program at our Abingdon, UK facility. This role partners with site leadership, engineering, operations, and the Global HSE team to help maintain compliance and drive continuous improvement in a technically complex manufacturing and laboratory environment. The role serves as a hands-on site HSE subject matter expert and trusted partner to the local team.

Work Schedule: On-site | Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, with flexibility to work occasional nights/weekends and emergency response activities as required.

Reporting Line: This role reports to the HSE Manager.

What you’ll do:

HSE Program Delivery & Technical Guidance

  • Drive implementation and continual improvement of the site HSE management system.

  • Act as the primary HSE point of contact and senior subject matter expert for the Abingdon site, providing authoritative technical guidance to site leadership and cross-functional partners.

  • Translate global and regional HSE objectives into site-level programs, actions, and performance metrics.

  • Work collaboratively with site and global HSE teams to share best practices and improve performance in Abingdon.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with UK environmental and occupational health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, COSHH, DSEAR, PUWER, Environmental Permitting Regulations, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

  • Maintain legal registers, regulatory applicability assessments, and site compliance documentation.

  • Lead site HSE audits, inspections, and regulatory interactions, including preparation, execution, and closure of findings.

  • Oversee risk assessment programs for manufacturing processes, laboratories, equipment, and new technology introductions, ensuring appropriate controls are defined and implemented.

  • Develop and monitor leading and lagging HSE performance indicators to proactively identify risk trends and drive continuous improvement.

  • Support the Management of Change (MOC) process for new equipment, process modifications, laboratory changes, and technology introductions.

  • Partner with engineering and operations teams to support safe installation, operation, and maintenance of toxic and hazardous gas systems, including gas cabinets, detection systems, and associated emergency controls in compliance with COSHH and DSEAR.

  • Ensure compliance with UK environmental legislation and permit requirements, maintaining environmental management programs for hazardous waste, air emissions, wastewater, spill prevention, and pollution prevention.

  • Conduct environmental risk assessments, audits, and regulatory interactions, ensuring environmental requirements are incorporated into new processes, equipment, and facility modifications.

Hazardous Materials & manufacturing Safety

  • Manage site hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and toxic and hazardous gas safety programs, including governance, procedures, and engineering control strategies.

  • Ensure effective management of toxic and hazardous gas systems, including gas cabinets, detection and alarm systems, ventilation controls, and emergency response readiness, in compliance with COSHH and DSEAR.

  • Provide HSE leadership for manufacturing, laboratory, and cleanroom safety programs, including machine safety, laser safety, hazardous gases, and contractor safety.

  • Partner with engineering, facilities, and vendors to support safe design, installation, commissioning, and modification of tools and equipment.

Training, Culture & Engagement

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver regulatory-required and role-based HSE training programs.

  • Champion a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, engagement with employees and contractors, and accountability at all levels.

  • Provide technical leadership to site safety committees and working groups, ensuring effective governance and follow-through on actions.

  • Apply modern safety principles, including Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), to strengthen system resilience and organizational learning.

Incident Management & Emergency Response

  • Lead investigations of incidents, near-misses, and high-potential events using root cause analysis and ensuring robust corrective and preventive actions.

  • Serve as the HSE lead for  emergency response activities during site events, coordinating with site leadership and post-incident recovery efforts as needed.

  • Ensure site emergency preparedness programs, emergency response teams, drills, and equipment readiness are established and maintained..

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of UK HSE regulatory requirements and practical application in manufacturing, laboratory, or high-hazard environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead site-level HSE programs and influence cross-functional partners.

  • Strong risk assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities in complex technical environments.

  • Ability to provide technical leadership, mentoring, or supervision to HSE professionals.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage regulators, leadership, employees, and contractors.

  • Experience supporting the safe use and control of toxic and hazardous gases, including monitoring systems, emergency procedures, and compliance with DSEAR and COSHH requirements.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in Environmental Health & Safety.

  • NEBOSH Diploma (Level 6) or equivalent professional qualification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading HSE programs in semiconductor manufacturing, cleanroom, laboratory, or advanced manufacturing environments.

  • Experience implementing and sustaining  HSG65 principles, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.

  • Chartered status (CMIOSH) or working toward chartership.

We offer a competitive salary range of £64,000 - £80,000 which is commensurate with your qualifications and experience and the level of this role. This position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs. Our compensation philosophy is designed to attract and retain top talent in the industry.
