The Head of Advisory is a senior leadership role within the Compliance function of MS Amlin Underwriting Limited (MS Amlin), the managing agency for MS Amlin’s Lloyd’s syndicate. The role holder is responsible for leading the Advisory, Operations and Continuous Monitoring pillar, ensuring the business receives clear, pragmatic and effective compliance advice and oversight. Working closely with the General Counsel (SMF16) and wider Compliance function, the role will support the design and delivery of the Compliance Strategy and Plan, while playing a key role in embedding a strong, risk-aware culture across the business. The role includes direct line management responsibility within the pillar, together with overall oversight of the wider team reporting through that structure.

The scope of the role includes all entities within the MS Amlin governance framework, including MS Amlin’s service companies and the corporate member. The role reports to the General Counsel.

You will also be a member of the General Counsel’s Senior Leadership Team.

About The Job

While there is rarely a typical day, here’s a snapshot of some of the key parts of the job:

  • Working directly with the General Counsel and the wider business to shape the Compliance function’s annual strategy, including the Compliance plan and Integrated Assurance Plan, ensuring priorities are clearly articulated for Executive Committee and Board audiences.

  • Supporting the General Counsel in all aspects of department management (e.g. Away Days, Team and Department Meetings, Budgeting, Training, Knowledge Management etc).

  • Accountable with the General Counsel for the annual Compliance Function effectiveness assessment and associated improvement actions.

  • Supporting the General Counsel in thought leadership and execution which contributes to the continued integration and alignment of Compliance within the wider MS Amlin business, including driving a strong risk-aware culture across the business.

  • Oversee the identification, classification, investigation and escalation of regulatory breaches in accordance with internal governance and regulatory requirements

  • Supporting the General Counsel with ad-hoc projects and initiatives for the broader 2nd Line  Compliance function, as required.

  • Primary responsibility for oversight of the Compliance Monitoring plan, including shaping and delivering continuous monitoring activity and oversight of the specialist reviews currently outsourced to a third party provider.

  • Primary day-to-day delivery responsibility for all aspects of the Compliance function pertaining to Advisory work, Operational compliance support and Compliance Monitoring. This will include, but is not limited to: Annual PBO assessment, SMCR regime and associated Management Responsibilities mapping, Regulatory Horizon Scanning and associated business readiness, Regulatory Submissions and management of the Regulatory Reporting Calendar, Emerging regulatory issues

  • Supporting and advising on the delivery of Consumer Duty and Conduct Risk and Product oversight (including the annual CD attestation)

  • Co-ordinating and managing regulatory engagement across the business in an effective and efficient manner, including maintaining strong working relationships with regulators and ensuring all internal stakeholders are appropriately engaged and briefed.

  • Attending and/or chairing internal committees where Compliance representation is required, as appropriate, including preparing and presenting high-quality reports and updates for senior management, Executive Committee and Board-level forums. This will require an appropriate balance of support and critical challenge to ensure all risks and opportunities, which have a Compliance dimension, are well understood and managed by the business.

  • Representing MS Amlin at external forums, as appropriate and required for the role

  • The role will encompass responsibility for Compliance oversight over activities in other jurisdictions where we operate and responsibility for the designated MS Amlin representative for Compliance in those jurisdictions, including Dubai, Singapore and other service companies/branches, as required and appropriate.

  • Leading business development initiatives and special projects relevant to the Compliance function, as required.

  • Leading relationships with stakeholders in other functions across the business, on issues pertaining to your pillar of the Compliance function, to understand their priorities and operational performance, proactively identifying any compliance risks and requirements and influencing senior stakeholders to deliver appropriate outcomes.

People & Culture

  • Support the General Counsel in leading a high-performance culture in your immediate team and the wider 2nd line function.

  • Provide effective leadership and line management to the team, providing guidance, support and empower those with line management responsibilities as they manage their teams.

  • Define team objectives and allocate responsibility throughout the team, undertake regular evaluation and feedback on individual performance outcome, this includes conducting regular performance review meetings.

  • In co-ordination with the HR team, be responsible for the recruitment, selection and on-boarding employees within the team.

  • Identify capability gaps within the Compliance function and support the development of competency frameworks, training plans and resourcing requirements

  • Provide the people within the function with the opportunities, training and experience to expand their knowledge and improve their skills.

  • Manage and strengthen effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, influencing to encourage better business decisions.

  • Promote and deliver a culture of open communication, collaboration and continuous improvement; mentoring and sharing technical expertise with colleagues to deliver a superior service.

  • Act as an ambassador of the company, raising our profile in the market and actively strengthening our claims reputation.

  • Deputise and otherwise participate on behalf of the General Counsel as requested at meetings and events where senior representation is required.

What you’ll need:

For this role there are some important qualifications and experience we need you to have. These include:

  • Strong execution skills and an ability to remain resilient under pressure.

  • Strong people management including coaching and knowledge sharing. Understand the difference between management and leadership and a clear sense of your leadership style.

  • Evidence of driving culture across a team or function, setting clear expectations and role-modelling behaviours that support accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Can articulate vision, support development and execution of strategy.

  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements across Lloyd’s, PRA and FCA, including Solvency II, Solvency UK, Conduct and Consumer Duty, as well as familiarity with international regimes including Dubai, Singapore and Australia.

  • Strong organisational skills to manage delivery to deadlines and to a high standard.

  • Expert judgement in knowing when and how to engage upwards.

  • Evidence of driving change and continuous improvements within a compliance function

  • Ability to shape MI, providing insight in executive and board committee quarterly reporting.

  • A good working knowledge of the Lloyd’s Market, including familiarity with its placement and process requirements.

  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate in writing and verbally, with strong report writing skills and the ability to tailor messaging for Executive Committee, Board and senior stakeholder audiences. Gravitas and the ability to hold your own in meetings with HoDs, C-level executives and non-executive directors.

  • Strong presentational skills covering Townhalls, Board and Executive Committee levels, including confidence operating with senior stakeholders and providing clear, credible insight and challenge. Ability to chair management level committees, as appropriate.

  • Advanced regulatory relationship management experience, including managing effective relationships with regulators such as the PRA, FCA, Lloyd’s, DFSA, MAS and APRA.

  • Exceptional drafting skills and the ability to critically review the work of others.

  • Outsourcing/consultancy service management skills.

  • Unquestionable discretion and integrity given the sensitive nature of much of the information you will be privy to.
