GHJ Search & Staffing is working with a mission-driven nonprofit organization in Los Angeles who is seeking an experienced Grant Accountant to take ownership of the accounting and financial management of a diverse grant portfolio.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can go beyond processing transactions. The ideal candidate will be comfortable reading and interpreting grant agreements, determining financial and compliance requirements, building grant tracking processes, monitoring budgets, and partnering directly with program leadership.
This position is best suited for a self-sufficient and analytical accountant who can identify discrepancies, solve problems independently, and bring structure to the grant accounting process.
Key Responsibilities:

Manage the financial lifecycle of approximately 27 grants

Review and interpret grant agreements and funding requirements

Develop and maintain grant tracking schedules, templates, and reporting tools

Monitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with funding restrictions

Prepare and review budget-to-actual reporting and variance analysis

Manage payroll and operating expense allocations across grants

Prepare grant financial reports, reimbursement requests, and supporting documentation

Reconcile grant activity to the general ledger

Support month-end close and grant-related journal entries

Monitor restricted funding and ensure appropriate coding of expenses

Partner closely with Program Directors to monitor spending and address over/underspending

Identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and recommend solutions

Maintain documentation and schedules in support of financial and grant audits
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

Strong nonprofit grant accounting experience

Experience independently managing multiple grants

Demonstrated understanding of the full grant lifecycle

Experience with grant budgeting, budget-to-actual reporting, payroll allocations, expense allocations, and restricted funding

Ability to read and interpret grant agreements and translate requirements into accounting and reporting processes

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently

Strong communication skills and experience partnering with program or non-finance leadership

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

Experience with accounting/ERP systems
