The Freight & Logistics Planner is responsible for keeping shipments moving at the best cost and service level. The role analyzes freight spend, carrier performance and shipping patterns. It turns those findings into recommendations on routing, mode selection, carrier sourcing and cost reduction, and works closely with carriers, warehouse teams, procurement and finance.

The Freight and Logistics Planner plays an integral role in our Customer Experience and ensures our Customers receive exceptional service throughout the flow of order processing, as well as ensuring problems with order flow are expertly resolved.

Responsibilities:

• Load planning and scheduling: Plan inbound and outbound shipments and build loads that make the best use of trailer and container space.
• Carrier booking: Tender loads to contracted carriers or brokers, choose the right mode (FTL, LTL, intermodal, or air) and confirm capacity.
• Shipment tracking: Monitor freight in transit and give customers and internal teams proactive updates on delays or exceptions. Work with CER and Scheduling when customer has a must arrive date.
• Issue resolution: Handle missed pickups, delays, damages, refused deliveries and re-routing, and file claims when needed. Minimize freight claims and work with the freight partners to find the root cause. File freight claims on time with all freight carriers.
• Documentation: Prepare and check bills of lading, packing lists, commercial invoices and customs paperwork. Coordinate with customs brokers on cross-border shipments.
• Warehouse coordination: Line up dock schedules, staffing needs and order readiness with the warehouse so loads ship on time.
• Cost control: Choose cost-effective routes and carriers, consolidate shipments where possible and keep accessorial charges (detention, redelivery, storage) to a minimum. Reduce freight cost on an ongoing basis established in the business plan, annualized savings on the freight costs (Gross sales v/s freight costs).
• Systems: Keep shipment data, rates and appointments accurate in the ERP.
• Performance tracking: Report on carrier on-time performance, OTIF and shipping costs, and suggest process improvements.
• Compliance: Make sure shipments follow DOT and Transport Canada rules, hours-of-service limits, dangerous goods/hazmat rules and customs regulations.
• Sourcing and qualification: Find new carriers and service providers when you need more capacity, new lanes or backup options. Collect carrier profiles covering equipment types, service areas, fleet size, specialties (reefer, flatbed, hazmat, cross-border) and references. Screen carriers against company criteria such as years in business, safety record, financial stability and capacity.

Requirements

We are seeking passionate candidates who possess the following experience and competencies:

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in supply chain, logistics or business, or equivalent experience.
• 3-5 years of experience in transportation planning, dispatch or freight coordination
• Knowledge of freight modes, Incoterms and shipping documentation
• Strong Excel skills and comfort working in a TMS and ERP
• Able to juggle priorities and make quick decisions under pressure
• Clear, professional communication with carriers and customers

This position is also required to wear PPE (safety shoes, safety glasses, and hi-visibility vest) when in the plant / warehouse.
