The Fleet Operations Supervisor plays a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable performance of Smithfield’s private fleet. In this role, you will oversee daily fleet operations and provide direct leadership to private fleet staff, ensuring consistent service levels, effective problem resolution, and strong communication across drivers, Smithfield facilities, and corporate teams. You will help drive operational excellence by maintaining high service standards, supporting drivers, and coordinating logistics to deliver exceptional support to our production plants, distribution centers, and customers.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Fleet Optimization: Analyze and evaluate private fleet operations to identify routing adjustments, network efficiencies, and cost-savings opportunities.

  • Routing & Scheduling: Coordinate and develop daily/weekly routes and schedules to support business needs.

  • Dispatch Management: Oversee the dispatch process, ensuring efficient planning and scheduling of drivers and deliveries to maximize equipment utilization, reduce miles, and meet shipment timelines.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build and maintain strong working relationships with Transportation, DC/Plant Management, Customer Service, and Supply & Demand Planning teams to resolve scheduling changes and transportation issues.

  • Operational Analysis: Review transportation activity data, identify trends, and recommend or implement improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce cost.

  • Reporting & Performance Tracking: Develop and maintain reporting on transportation metrics, including cost per mile, operating ratio, equipment utilization, driver availability, and delivery performance.

  • Equipment Utilization: Ensure procedures related to equipment operation and utilization are followed; address issues promptly to maintain operational efficiency.

  • Process Improvement & Compliance: Create, maintain, and update operational policies, procedures, and processes to ensure efficiency and regulatory compliance.

  • Driver Performance Management: Optimize performance of assigned drivers, including on-time pickup/delivery, Hours of Service (HOS) compliance, availability, and scheduling alignment.

  • Leadership: Drives a positive employee experience through leadership by way of employee development and coaching.

WHAT WE’RE SEEKING:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 2+ years of operational experience in driver management, route planning, and a working understanding of DOT regulations; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • Leadership: Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project.

  • Technical Skills: Basic competency with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work effectively and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in a cross-functional environment with both internal and external team members.

  • Collaboration & Culture: Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; ability to be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • Availability: Must be available to address Private Fleet–related issues as they arise.

  • Travel: Will be required to travel up to 5%.

OTHER SKILLS THAT MAKE YOU STAND OUT:

  • Understanding State and Federal regulations preferred.

The expected pay range for this position is $55,000 - $82,500 annually.

Smithfield Foods provides pay ranges that reflect its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the company reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of hire. Individual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, location of the position, the candidate’s qualifications and experience, internal equity, external market pay for comparable positions and budget considerations.
