ABOUT THE JOB

The Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager for Maritime Division serves as the strategic link between the Maritime Division and the EHS organization, embedding safety and risk management into both the earliest stages of program development and the ongoing execution of divisional priorities. This role enables proactive risk identification during concept development while ensuring the EHS organization remains aligned with the Maritime Division’s evolving operational, technical, and business objectives.

By integrating with engineering, program management, and business development teams early in the design lifecycle, this position helps shape inherently safer manufacturing processes and facility operations before risks become embedded in program execution. Simultaneously, the role serves as the primary EHS representative within the Maritime Division, fostering strong relationships, facilitating two-way communication, and ensuring EHS strategies evolve in support of organic growth, new business pursuits, and changing operational needs

Position is on-site at Quincy, MA or Quonset, RI.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Early Design Lifecycle Risk Integration

    • Participate in the earliest phases of program and product development, including concept development, proposal activities, and preliminary design reviews.
    • Partner with engineering, program management, and technical leadership to identify Environment, Health & Safety risks before design decisions are finalized.
    • Lead or facilitate structured EHS risk assessments for conceptual and developmental programs.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical mitigation strategies that eliminate or reduce hazards through design.
    • Influence manufacturing process, production planning, and facility layout decisions to eliminate or reduce hazards before implementation.
    • Ensure EHS considerations are incorporated into design reviews, technology maturation efforts, and program milestones.
    • Support the development of risk documentation, hazard analyses, and decision-making tools appropriate for early lifecycle activities.
    • Develop deep technical and operational understanding of Maritime Division programs, systems, and operations to proactively identify EHS risks and inform effective mitigation strategies.

    Maritime Division EHS Business Partnership

    • Serve as the primary EHS liaison to the Maritime Division.
    • Build trusted relationships with division leadership, engineering, operations, and program teams to understand current priorities and emerging needs.
    • Communicate EHS initiatives, policies, capabilities, and resources into the division in a manner that supports mission execution.
    • Represent divisional perspectives, challenges, and future requirements within the EHS organization to influence priorities, staffing, tools, and processes.
    • Provide insight into divisional organic growth strategies, technology roadmaps, and new business pursuits to ensure EHS engagement occurs proactively.
    • Identify opportunities where early EHS involvement can improve program execution, reduce risk, and enhance competitive positioning.
    • Coordinate EHS support across multiple functional disciplines to ensure consistent engagement with Maritime programs.

    Strategic Leadership

    • Promote a culture of proactive risk management rather than reactive compliance.
    • Develop partnerships that position EHS as a trusted technical advisor throughout the program lifecycle.
    • Monitor emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and industry best practices relevant to maritime products and operations.
    • Recommend process improvements that strengthen integration between EHS and engineering, business development, and program execution.
    • Support strategic initiatives that improve organizational risk management capability

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Safety/Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Progressive EHS experience in engineering, manufacturing, maritime, defense, aerospace, or other complex technical/industrial environments.
  • Experience conducting hazard analyses or risk assessments integrated with engineering and program decision-making, not purely after-the-fact compliance work.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence multidisciplinary teams without direct authority.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to translate technical risk into actionable business and engineering recommendations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Direct experience in maritime, shipbuilding, or naval engineering/operations environments (vessel construction, shipyard operations, marine systems).
  • Experience supporting new manufacturing or facility buildout.
  • Advanced degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental/Occupational Health, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Natural tendency towards challenging the status quo; leans into hard problems instead of walking away.
