Position Summary

This Intern will work directly with the SJIU, Utility Shared Services Team which includes Emergency Preparedness, Compliance (PHMSA and NJBPU), DOT Compliance, Standards, Quality Assurance, Records, GIS and CAD/Drafting teams.

Essential Functions:

• Support the Emergency Preparedness, Compliance, DOT Compliance, Standards, Quality Assurance, Records, GIS and CAD/Drafting departments on various projects and tasks.
• Assist the Standards Department in assuring that Company Standards are kept current with the Federal, State, and local requirements as well as natural gas industry best practices.
• Review current Standards and recommend changes.
• Basic drafting of Standard Details.
• Assist in the review of new materials and tools proposed for the company.
• Assist the Compliance and DOT Departments in the preparation of reports and analysis regarding transmission and distribution compliance and quality assurance activities.
• Participate in business and functional meetings to understand reporting/data requirements.
• Assist the Emergency Preparedness Department in the planning and review of drills and exercises related to Gas Utility practices.
• Review Emergency Preparedness documents for conformance with Federal and State codes as well as industry’s best practices.
• Assist in performing field audits and inspections to ensure internal employees and contractors are performing tasks in compliance with organization manuals and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in group meetings related to Quality Assurance. Present results of work, interpret data, and draw conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work.
• Examine documents to verify completeness and accuracy of data and resolve discrepancies with document originators.
• Map existing utilities for land development, asset management and utility projects. This typically includes generating a variety of GIS products and performing data searches and retrievals.
• Assist in the design, development, testing and implementation of GIS applications to meet customer needs and enterprise requirements; developing and maintaining GIS databases; and keeping track of utility information received from various sources and perform data conversion from field survey and record documents.

Qualifications

Required Background:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience
• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree, with a graduation date of Fall 2026 or later
• The ideal candidate would be a rising Junior or Senior, however, all students are welcome for consideration

Required Skills:

• Strong communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills
• Detail-oriented with strong time-management skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Ability to prioritize and organize work in a multi-tasked environment

Preferred Skills:

• Ability to read and interpret codes (Federal, State, Industry, Company, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret simple engineering documents and drawings
• Basic drafting experience (AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, etc.)
• Technical writing skill and/or experience
• Ability to perform basic or introductory engineering calculations

The pay range for this position reflects the base salary only and does not include benefits, bonuses, or other forms of compensation that might be part of the total compensation package. The specific salary offered will be based on a candidate’s qualifications, education, and experience.
