Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Building Maintenance, the Electrical Maintenance Engineer provides technical leadership and expertise for the planning, operation, maintenance, renewal, and continuous improvement of the University's electrical infrastructure and building systems.
The incumbent serves as the subject matter expert for electrical assets across the University's portfolio, ensuring the reliability, safety, performance, and sustainability of building systems. The role supports maintenance operations, capital planning, construction and renovation projects, and the development of technical standards that align with McGill University's operational requirements and long-term strategic objectives.
The successful candidate will play a key role in asset lifecycle management, preventive maintenance planning, infrastructure renewal, and the technical review of projects to ensure institutional standards and industry best practices are consistently applied.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Act as the University's electrical engineering expert for building infrastructure and electrical systems. Provides guidance, recommendations, and advice to maintenance teams as well as Project Managers throughout all phases of projects from planning to project close-out.
- Develop and recommend corrective and preventative solutions through conducting investigations, root cause analyses, and reliability assessments. Evaluate the condition, performance, and remaining service life of electrical assets through technical inspections, site assessments, and field surveys.
- Review electrical plans, specifications, drawings, and design submissions prepared by consultants and contractors. Ensure that contractors and vendors comply with institutional and regulatory requirements while performing electrical work on campus. Participate in commissioning activities, site inspections, testing, and acceptance of new installations.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering studies, presentations recommendations, and condition assessment documents for senior management.
- Develop, implement, and continuously enhance preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical systems and equipment, while establishing procedures and best practices that promote safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
- Establish short-, medium-, and long-term replacement strategies for critical electrical infrastructure. Maintain asset condition data and recommend renewal and capital investment priorities based on asset performance, risk, and lifecycle considerations.
- Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, operational efficiency, and energy performance. Monitor emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory developments, and recommend innovative solutions that enhance sustainability, resilience, lifecycle value, and long-term infrastructure planning.
- Ensure compliance with McGill University design standards, technical requirements, applicable electrical codes, regulations, and industry best practices to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
- Contribute to the University’s strategic direction by identifying opportunities of development, implementation, and continuous improvement of electrical engineering standards and technical guidelines. Provide expertise in long-term infrastructure planning, asset management strategies, and campus development initiatives.
- Promote a culture of safety, reliability, and continuous improvement by providing support for electrical safety programs and safe work procedures.
- Ensure that contractors and vendors comply with institutional and regulatory requirements while performing electrical work on campus.
- Participate in technical committees and represent Building Maintenance in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- An undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
- Licensed Professional Engineer and member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) is required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in building systems, facilities engineering, maintenance, asset management, or electrical infrastructure within institutional, commercial, healthcare, industrial, or higher education environments.
- Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and maintaining electrical building systems.
- Experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong knowledge of preventive maintenance principles, asset lifecycle management, and infrastructure renewal planning.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and safety regulations.
- Experience supporting construction, renovation, commissioning, or capital projects is considered a strong asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Sound engineering judgment and decision-making abilities.
