The Health and Safety Specialist supports day-to-day operations by managing a number of critical EHS processes including performing workplace audits and inspections, coaching employees on safety practices, and delivering health and safety training. The Health and Safety Specialist will play a key role in the incident and injury reporting process by working with Supervisors and Managers across multiple departments.

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive EHS Management System. 
  • Assist in the development of and compliance to Safe Work Practices (SWP), regulatory standards (OSHA, EPA, ADEQ, Fire Code, U.S. Department of Education, etc.) and university policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing means and methods to ensure active employee engagement in the EHS Management System such as leading or participating in safety committees, responding to employee safety concerns in a timely manner or gathering input from employees when developing safe work practices. 
  • Plan and conduct routine and periodic workplace audits and inspections to assess existing conditions and to determine compliance with policies, procedures, and applicable regulations and based upon the assessment, developing recommendations for corrective actions. 
  • Conduct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments; research safety equipment which meets business and regulations and recommends safety equipment/supply purchases. 
  • Work with management team to perform investigations to determine causal factors and develop preventative and corrective actions.    
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining EHS Programs such as LOTO, Electrical Safety, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Safety, Laboratory Safety, Waste Management, Emergency Response, Powered Industrial Trucks, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, etc. 
  • Assist with follow up actions from insurance carrier audit recommendations. 
  • Conduct EHS Inspection Program tasks including but not limited to safety shower and eyewash stations, fixed ladders, portable ladders, chemical storage, spill control, fall protection equipment, gas detection equipment, PPE, forklifts, MEWP, work vehicles, etc. 
  • Maintain logs and documentation associated with EHS Inspection Program. 
  • Perform regulatory liaison and ensure inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and deficiencies minimized and corrected rapidly.
  • Maintain detailed records associated with the specific duties within the EHS program.
  • Keep current with EHS-related policy changes to quickly perform applicable GCU policy and procedure adjustments.
  • Perform EHS-related training to GCU staff, students, and contractors which meets regulatory and campus policy.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational health and safety. 
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing occupational health and safety (i.e. OSHA).    
  • Skill in interpreting and applying federal, state and local safety laws and regulations.
  • Skill in developing and conducting health and safety training classes for staff, faculty and students.
  • Skill in investigating and analyzing accidents and their causes.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of industrial hygiene to include applicable measurement and/or sampling methods and technologies.
  • Apply the principles of industrial hygiene to include recognition, evaluation and control of recognized hazards.
  • Ability to work directly with local, state and federal regulatory agencies. 
  • Proficient in verbal communication with individuals in face-to-face, one-on-one setting or by telephone.
  • Speaks and writes clearly, concisely and effectively; listens to, and understands information and ideas as presented verbally or in writing.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the University’s organization.
  • Establishes priorities for own workload based upon such factors as need for immediate action, work objectives, work schedule, knowledge of future needs, etc.
  • Ability to comprehend and make inferences from written material.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with a demonstrated ability to handle, prioritize, coordinate and complete competing tasks within deadlines.

  • Willing to work outside normal business hours on days or weekends, if an emergency situation exists.

Education and/or Experience:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Associate degree in occupational health and safety or other health and safety related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the occupational health and safety field.
  • Significant knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Able to pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must have valid driver's license and clean driving record

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Subject Matter Expert in all applicable federal, local and state EHS regulations.
  • Occupational health and safety experience in a college or university environment.

  • Professional certification (ASP, ASHM, etc)
