Job Description
 

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the Regulated Hazardous Waste Program, including waste characterization, manifest review and signature, manifest corrections, tracking, discrepancy resolution, and identification of new waste streams.
  • Ensure assigned EH&S programs maintain full regulatory compliance with local, state, federal, and internal environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain required regulatory reports, permits, registrations, and associated fee submissions within established deadlines.
  • Monitor and manage environmental compliance obligations, ensuring documentation is accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
  • Develop, track, and report service-level metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate licensing, permitting, inspection, and training activities for assigned EH&S programs and maintain associated records.
  • Serve as the EH&S representative on cross-functional projects, providing environmental and safety guidance during planning, execution, and implementation activities.
  • Support business stakeholders in evaluating environmental and safety risks associated with new processes, equipment, facilities, and operational changes.
  • Supervise and coordinate contingent workforce personnel supporting EH&S programs and initiatives, as needed.
  • Support ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System requirements, including implementation, maintenance, audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in management system assessments and compliance audits, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
  • Drive process standardization and continuous improvement efforts to enhance safety performance, environmental stewardship, and operational effectiveness.
  • Maintain inspection-ready records and documentation related to hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, permits, training, and management systems.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies, vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure effective program execution and compliance.

General Responsibilities of EH&S Team Members:

  • Support Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) programs to ensure compliance with environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct workplace hazard assessments and identify, document, and mitigate potential safety and environmental risks.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EH&S programs, procedures, and best practices across supported customer groups.
  • Plan, conduct, and document EH&S audits and inspections to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and deliver EH&S training programs, including regulatory, environmental, and safety-related topics.
  • Facilitate New Hire Orientation training and ensure employees receive required EH&S education and compliance training.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for EH&S compliance requirements and provide guidance to employees, scientists, and management.
  • Participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), including periodic 24-hour on-call support as required.
  • Build strong relationships with staff, scientists, and leadership to provide high-quality customer service and support EH&S initiatives.
  • Act as a primary EH&S point of contact for assigned business units and customer groups.
  • Assist with implementation and administration of site-wide EH&S programs in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Promote safety awareness and a proactive safety culture through communication, training, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Track, analyze, and report EH&S metrics and compliance activities to support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Recommend process improvements and corrective actions to reduce risk and enhance workplace safety and environmental performance.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience.

OR

  • Master's degree in Health & Safety, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Microsoft PowerPoint
    • Microsoft Access
    • Other standard Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations
  • Understanding of environmental compliance programs and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of sustainable business practices and environmental stewardship initiatives.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standards and environmental management principles.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and record-management skills.
  • Ability to interpret regulations, procedures, and technical requirements and apply them to operational environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while maintaining compliance and meeting deadlines.


 

The salary range for this position is: $109,650.00 - $141,900.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
