Position Summary

The Echocardiography & Vascular Ultrasound Technician is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound examinations to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular conditions. This role performs comprehensive cardiac imaging studies, vascular diagnostic testing, and quantitative measurements while ensuring compliance with established clinical protocols, accreditation standards, and State of California requirements.

The technician maintains certification and competency in both echocardiography and vascular ultrasound, ensuring compliance with applicable California regulatory requirements and industry standards. This position collaborates closely with physicians, clinical staff, and patients to deliver accurate, timely, and quality diagnostic services while supporting exceptional patient care.

Essential Functions

  • Perform transthoracic echocardiograms and ensure completeness of examinations prior to physician interpretation.
  • Perform vascular ultrasound studies, including arterial, venous, carotid, and peripheral vascular examinations as ordered by providers.
  • Obtain and document accurate diagnostic measurements and imaging data.
  • Verify patient identity, explain procedures, and ensure patient comfort throughout examinations.
  • Prepare and organize reports, worksheets, images, and supporting documentation for physician review.
  • Utilize electronic medical record (EMR) and order entry systems to access, perform, document, and complete diagnostic studies.
  • Take and document physician orders for diagnostic testing in accordance with organizational protocols.
  • Maintain diagnostic imaging equipment in proper working condition and report equipment issues promptly.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate ordering of supplies needed for diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain accurate records and distribution of completed reports.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality assurance standards.
  • Participate in ongoing education and competency programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Echocardiography Services

  • Perform 2D, M-Mode, Doppler, Color Flow Doppler, and related cardiac imaging procedures.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in obtaining quantitative measurements from echocardiographic studies.
  • Ensure diagnostic image quality sufficient for physician interpretation.
  • Assist cardiologists and providers by preparing complete and organized testing documentation.

Vascular Diagnostic Services

  • Perform non-invasive vascular studies, including:
    • Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
    • Venous Duplex Studies
    • Arterial Duplex Studies
    • Lower Extremity Arterial and Venous Testing
    • Peripheral Vascular Examinations
  • Accurately document findings and measurements for physician interpretation.
  • Maintain vascular imaging standards consistent with best practices and regulatory requirements.

Equipment & Quality Management

  • Maintain diagnostic equipment performance and functionality.
  • Perform routine quality assurance checks on equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental quality standards and accreditation requirements.

Patient Care & Communication

  • Provide professional and compassionate patient care.
  • Explain procedures and answer patient questions within scope of practice.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, clinical staff, and patients.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an AMA-accredited or CAAHEP-accredited cardiovascular ultrasound or diagnostic medical sonography program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing echocardiography and vascular ultrasound studies preferred.
  • Strong understanding of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and vascular disease processes.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and diagnostic imaging systems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and patient service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Certifications, Licensure & Registry Requirements

  • Current Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required.
  • Current Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credential required, or ability to obtain within an organization-defined timeframe.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Must maintain active vascular certification and all required credentials necessary to meet applicable State of California requirements and organizational standards for performing vascular diagnostic studies.
  • Ongoing continuing education required to maintain registry and certification status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a multi-specialty medical group or outpatient clinic setting.
  • Experience performing both cardiac and vascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Advanced experience with cardiovascular diagnostic equipment and reporting systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and move throughout clinic environments for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands, arms, and fingers to operate ultrasound equipment and computer systems.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to evaluate diagnostic imaging studies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, providers, and staff.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in outpatient medical clinic and diagnostic imaging settings.
  • Moderate noise level typical of a healthcare environment
  • May be required to travel between clinic locations as needed.
Hourly pay range
$41$47 USD
