Come join our collaborative and innovative team at DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations!

DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations has been an industry leader in the design and supply of high-voltage, open-air substations, and switchyards since 1965. Over a half-century of building meaningful relationships with our customers and vendors boils down to one thing: people. We take pride in our collaborative approach where everything we do is designed to deliver the project the right way, your way. Though we have grown over the years, and now offer new innovations like our Factory-Built
Substations, our age-old commitment will never change: to take care of you like family.

The Factory-Built Substation (FBS) Field Technician is a member of the Project Support Services (PSS) team and supports FBS installations from project planning through commissioning. This position serves as the primary technical liaison among DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations, customers, contractors, and internal departments to help ensure safe, efficient, and successful installations.

The FBS Field Technician provides pre-installation planning, on-site installation support, inspections, training, and post-installation feedback, helping bridge the gap between factory manufacturing and field construction. When not traveling, the technician owns the field-to-factory feedback loop by preparing upcoming installations, documenting and communicating field issues and lessons learned, maintaining installation-focused standards and documentation, and transferring field knowledge to internal teams.

Success in this position requires strong mechanical aptitude, effective problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to build productive relationships with customers, contractors, and internal teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES - Pre-Installation Planning:

  • Review assigned projects with the Project Manager to understand project scope, site conditions, and installation requirements.
  • Prepare customer installation packets, including printed drawings and project documentation.
  • Participate in recurring logistics planning meetings to coordinate shipment schedules and installation readiness.
  • Develop, maintain, and facilitate completion of pre-construction checklists to improve customer and contractor readiness.
  • Schedule and facilitate pre-construction meetings approximately six weeks prior to equipment delivery, document action items, and follow up with stakeholders.
    • Collect stakeholder contact information from the Project Manager and coordinate meeting invitations.
    • Lead the meeting and verify applicable pre-construction checklist items are reviewed.
    • Distribute a written meeting recap documenting discussions, decisions, action items, and responsible parties.
    • Field Technician will review and discuss:
      • Route studies
      • Construction drawings
      • Installation sequencing
      • Required offloading equipment (cranes, spreader bars, etc.)
      • Site readiness, including whether the site is physically prepared for installation
      • Project schedule and installation expectations

RESPONSIBILITIES - Field Installation Support:

  • Travel to customer job sites to support Factory-Built Substation installations.
  • Inspect DTPS products for shipping damage, shortages, or other field-observed discrepancies.
  • Provide technical support to customers and contractors by:
    • Explaining installation drawings
    • Interpreting installation procedures
    • Answering technical questions
    • Troubleshooting installation issues
    • Identify, troubleshoot, and coordinate resolution of field issues involving:
      • Damaged equipment
      • Missing materials
      • Incorrect components
      • Fabrication discrepancies
      • Installation conflicts
      • Coordinate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Project Management to develop timely solutions.
      • Obtain installation photos and videos for inclusion in field reports and lessons-learned documentation.
      • Develop and maintain an installation checklist and lead its completion and review onsite with the customer and installation contractor(s).

RESPONSIBILITIES - Post-Installation Support:

  • Complete comprehensive field reports documenting installation successes, challenges, field issues, and corrective actions.
  • Meet monthly with the Director of Quality Assurance to review field observations and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze recurring installation issues and field observations to identify trends impacting Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, Logistics, Project Management, or field installation, and coordinate resulting follow-up actions with the responsible functional owners.
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with internal teams to review field issues and lessons learned, identify improvement opportunities, and coordinate resulting action items.
  • Develop and deliver lessons-learned presentations to appropriate internal teams highlighting:
    • Field observations
    • Common installation issues
    • Lessons learned
    • Best practices
    • Photos and videos from project sites

RESPONSIBILITIES - Facility Assignment / Non-Travel Responsibilities:

When not assigned to field travel, the FBS Field Technician's primary work location is the manufacturing facility. The technician independently works the established non-travel priorities and is not intended to supplement routine day-to-day operational staffing in Production, Quality, Engineering, Project Management, Logistics, or other departments.

  • Review upcoming FBS projects, delivery schedules, and installation dates in chronological order; proactively identify and complete readiness activities required before mobilization, including planning and booking travel in advance to help minimize travel costs and secure favorable rates.
  • Review construction and installation drawings, installation sequencing, shipping configuration, offloading requirements, required equipment and tooling, site-readiness requirements, customer/contractor responsibilities, project-specific risks, and applicable lessons learned from similar projects.
  • Maintain the FBS Field Issues & Lessons Learned Log; document and analyze field observations and recurring installation issues, communicate findings to the appropriate functional owners, coordinate required follow-up, and track resulting action items to closure.
  • Create and organize field records following each installation, including field reports, installation checklists, photos, videos, and field observations, so information is available for future projects and lessons learned.
  • Own and continuously improve installation-focused standards and field-use documentation, including pre-construction checklists, onsite installation checklists, installation packets, drawings, CRMs, bolting procedures, field guides, and other customer/contractor installation materials.
  • Develop lessons-learned content using actual field examples, photos, and videos, and transfer field knowledge through meetings, training, and reusable reference materials for internal teams and future FBS Field Technicians.
  • Independently work the established non-travel priorities in order and move to the next priority when current work is up to date; escalate decisions, approvals, roadblocks, or priority conflicts to the Production Manager.
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed to provide field information and track follow-up; the responsible department retains ownership of its routine operational work.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations (DTPS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DTPS operations, processes, and organizational structure.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across departments and with employees at various levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.
