Job Description:

CHEO is one of the few stand-alone, global leaders in pediatric health and is home to nearly 3,500 staff and physicians dedicated to helping children and youth live their best lives. Ranked in the top 1% of Canadian hospitals for the digitization of its clinical digital infrastructure, CHEO combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to advance seamless care that is provided where, when, and how it is needed. Every year, CHEO helps more than 500,000 children and youth from Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut, and Northern Ontario.

At CHEO, every role contributes to something bigger: delivering exceptional care and advancing the health and wellbeing of children, youth and families. We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join our team as Director, Clinical Engineering — a key leadership role responsible for shaping the future of clinical engineering services within CHEO and across our regional partnerships.

Reporting to the VP of Strategy and CIO, the Director, Clinical Engineering  provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical engineering services across the organization while overseeing CHEO’s regional clinical engineering service model. The Director is responsible for providing leadership to over 70 employees within the clinical engineering service team, which provides service to 20 healthcare facilities at 30 sites along with up to 300 other clinical entities as well as CHEO services. This role is instrumental in ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient management of clinical technology that supports high-quality patient care across the hospital and partner organizations throughout the region.

The successful candidate will lead the planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental strategies, quality improvement initiatives, risk management systems and operational priorities aligned with CHEO’s mission, values and strategic direction. As a trusted advisor to senior leadership, the Director contributes expertise to corporate planning and decision-making while ensuring biomedical engineering services remain innovative, sustainable and responsive to evolving healthcare needs and legislative requirements.

This role requires a collaborative and forward-thinking leader who can build strong relationships across clinical, operational and external stakeholder groups. The Director will work closely with internal departments, healthcare partners, vendors and regional customers to support service excellence, equipment reliability and long-term capital planning. The position also plays a critical role in identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost savings and service enhancements related to clinical equipment procurement, maintenance and utilization.

The Director, Clinical Engineering is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department, including operational oversight, financial stewardship and people leadership. This includes leading departmental planning, managing operating and capital budgets, overseeing contract negotiations and procurement processes, establishing performance metrics and ensuring the effective delivery of biomedical engineering services. The Director fosters a culture grounded in respect, accountability, wellbeing, safety and continuous learning while supporting employee engagement, development and performance management.

The ideal candidate brings a strong combination of strategic leadership,  operational excellence and technical competence. You are an experienced healthcare leader who can navigate complex environments, lead broad organizational initiatives and build trusted partnerships both internally and externally. You are comfortable balancing long-term planning with day-to-day operational demands and have a strong commitment to quality, safety and service improvement.

Candidates must possess a university degree in a relevant discipline along with approximately ten years of related experience, including a minimum of five years in a management or leadership capacity. Equivalent combinations of education, training and demonstrated experience may also be considered. Experience within healthcare or biomedical engineering environments is strongly valued.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional analytical, communication and relationship-building skills, along with the ability to manage complex projects, lead multidisciplinary teams and oversee significant operational budgets. A strong understanding of healthcare technology management, procurement practices, quality standards and occupational health and safety legislation is essential. Depending on departmental needs, this position may be designated bilingual.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a purpose-driven organization where innovation, collaboration and compassion are at the heart of everything we do. At CHEO, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on pediatric healthcare while leading critical services that support patients, families and healthcare teams across the region.

CHEO values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to providing an inclusive and barrier-free work environment, starting with the hiring process and welcome interest from all qualified applicants.
