About the Team and Role

We are looking for a Data Sceintist to join our Focus Category Analytics team. Our team builds data solutions that help eBay understand marketplace trends, improve customer experiences, and support growth across key categories, including Collectibles, Luxury, Sneakers, and Apparel.

In this role, you will design and develop scalable data platforms, pipelines, and tools that make it easier for analysts, data scientists, and business teams to explore data and generate insights.

You will contribute to building Data Studio capabilities, including interactive development environments, SQL editors, notebooks, and self-service analytics tools. You will also work with distributed data technologies to support reliable data processing and efficient access to large-scale datasets.

We are looking for someone who enjoys building practical engineering solutions and using AI coding agents to improve software development. You will collaborate with engineering, analytics, and product teams to deliver tools that support better decisions across eBay.

What You Will Accomplish

• Build data platforms: Design, develop, and maintain scalable data infrastructure and Data Studio capabilities that support data exploration, analytics, and development.
• Improve developer experiences: Build and enhance interactive tools such as Jupyter Notebook environments, SQL editors, query consoles, and data exploration interfaces.
• Enable large-scale data processing: Integrate data tools with distributed processing technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, Flink, and cloud-based compute services.
• Develop backend services: Build APIs and services to manage workspaces, user sessions, compute resources, and application lifecycles.
• Create reliable data solutions: Develop and maintain data pipelines, processing workflows, and reusable components that support analytics and reporting needs.
• Improve platform performance: Identify opportunities to enhance system reliability, scalability, security, and operational efficiency.
• Apply AI-assisted development: Use AI coding agents to support software design, development, testing, debugging, and code maintenance while ensuring code quality.
• Support workflow orchestration: Develop and improve data workflows using scheduling and orchestration tools such as Airflow or similar technologies.
• Collaborate across teams: Work with data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and product partners to understand their needs and deliver accessible, self-service data capabilities.
• Contribute to engineering quality: Participate in code reviews, testing, documentation, and monitoring to maintain reliable production systems.

What You Bring

• 4–7 years of experience in data engineering, software engineering, data platform development, or a related field.
• Experience developing applications and backend services using Python, Java, or similar programming languages.
• Experience working with SQL, data pipelines, data processing frameworks, and large-scale datasets.
• Familiarity with interactive data development tools such as Jupyter Notebook, SQL editors, query consoles, or similar platforms.
• Experience with distributed data processing technologies such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, Flink, or comparable systems.
• Understanding of REST APIs, backend services, distributed systems, and production software development.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience using AI coding agents, such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools, to develop, test, and maintain production-quality software.
• Ability to break down engineering problems into clear tasks and provide AI coding agents with appropriate context, requirements, constraints, and validation criteria.
• Experience documenting technical designs, codebase context, and operational knowledge to support effective AI-assisted development.
• Understanding of software engineering practices, including testing, code reviews, version control, monitoring, and maintainability.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and contribute to shared engineering goals.

What Will Help You Succeed

• Experience building internal developer platforms, data platforms, or self-service analytics tools.
• Familiarity with data workflow orchestration and distributed scheduling systems, such as Apache Airflow.
• Experience designing or operating notebook environments, interactive query platforms, or multi-user development workspaces.
• Exposure to cloud-based data infrastructure and container orchestration.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, observability, and production support.
• Experience improving software development workflows using AI-assisted engineering tools and automation.
• Interest in developing scalable platforms that make data more accessible and help teams work efficiently.
