Are you looking for a great place to work?  Our team at the is searching for our new Corporate Chief Engineer.  This professional is responsible to support and guide the ongoing maintenance and support the capital improvement process for all the hotels in the Hospitality Group of the B.F. Saul Company, and to directly lead the on going maintenance and capital improvement process for the Embassy Suites Dulles. This individual has a creative vision, entrepreneurial thinking, and a breadth of knowledge of a wide range of hospitality assets and building systems, and a strong background in maintaining MEP systems. He/She is process and detail driven to obtain results that exceed expectations of our guests, hotel teams and senior management. A focus on fiscal responsibility is also expected. This position is responsible for support of the engineering function at all hotels.  Uses leadership and technical skills to ensure effective implementation of maintenance programming and corporate standards to maximize the efficacy of the engineering staff, and the reliability and longevity of building equipment and systems. Effective support of assigned staff to ensure achievement of overall financial results, guest satisfaction and positive team member relations. 

He/She works collaboratively with the AVP, Capital Assets & Engineering and Regional Vice Presidents. They will have consistent Interaction with the hotels' engineering departments to maintain, protect and improve the properties with a focus on the company's mission statement. This individual will assist in the development of engineering departmental policies and training activities and will share responsibility with the general managers and regional operations leaders for maintenance activities at the hotels. A strong working knowledge of all components of the group's building assets, serving as a positive role model for the properties' engineering teams while representing the owner's fiduciary interests. The selected candidate will also facilitate capital improvement projects while working in a fast-paced environment, making professional recommendations that keep guest satisfaction and owner's interest in balance.

Specific Responsibilities:

Facilities Management Responsibilities - Manage proper and long-term maintenance of the hotels and assets therein through the following:

  • The CCE is responsible for the long-term maintenance of the hotel and assets therein. Oversee the quarterly scheduling of maintenance and monitoring of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, electric and other systems to ensure efficient operation and track through selected CMMS system. He/she must conduct routine walk-through of all properties, work area inspections and enforce preventative maintenance policies.
  • The CCE is responsible for the daily maintenance of the Embassy Suites Dulles and assets therein. Oversee scheduling of maintenance and monitoring of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, electric and other systems to ensure efficient operation and track through selected CMMS system.
  • Spearhead the Maintenance hotel teams' commitment to Our Big Three, Standards and Service, and Company Mission Statement and Values.
  • Ensure completion of the PM process throughout the year. Ensure compliance with all brand programs (where applicable) and general company policies and procedures. Fully implement all Company and Franchise operational policies and continually monitor compliance by the hotels' teams. Inspect and follow through.
  • Assist in the development the group’s Chief Engineer and engineering team. Focus clearly on the goals and actions that support the Hotel's Mission Statement. Lead by example.
  • Establish training at appropriate intervals for the Chief Engineers and Engineering Staff. Determine areas of improvement and implement a plan to address these areas through training and staff development.
  • Work with the Human Resource Team at each hotel to enhance engineering departments:
    • Recruitment
    • Hiring and Orientation
    • Training and Certification
    • Performance Appraisal and Communication -- Work with General Managers to conduct performance evaluations for Chief Engineers and engineering staff
    • Administration of Company Policies and Procedures
    • Lead the Safety/Quality Team process, follow-through on strategies, training and actions. Proactively address liability and loss prevention opportunities. Ensure completion of monthly safety and security committee meetings. Respond quickly and thoroughly to loss prevention issues raised during franchise, company and insurance inspections.
    • Fully implement on-property emergency preparedness training and procedures.
    • Participate in special assignments as necessary. 
    • Review social media, franchise measurement and other forms of guest feedback regularly to detect negative trends in building and or renovation related issues. Utilize this feedback to guide future decisions and/or investment needs.

      Capital Investment Responsibilities -- Collaborate with the AVP, Capital Assets & Engineering to develop and manage the annual capital maintenance budgets for assigned hotels. The ongoing process includes:

    • Write accurate scopes of work including specifications for each project. When necessary hire and manage third party consultants to provide appropriate and guided specifications and plans.
    • Collaborate with property and regional management teams, solicit and analyze competitive proposals. Review price quotes for the procurement of parts, services and labor, for facility-related projects, and make recommendations to senior management for approval as necessary, based on the company's capital expense approval process.
    • Coordinate work according to established project schedules and business demands at the hotels Lead project update meetings and include all appropriate stakeholders.
    • Identify and rectify through established policies, potential or existing conditions relating to life safety, legal or physical deficiencies at the properties when conducting onsite visits.
    • Ensure that assigned capital projects are completed on time and within budget in cooperation with the design and construction group or third parties. This function has wide-ranging implications, as the manager must be able to work with a variety of internal and external advisors.
    • Participate in special projects that may include evaluation (due diligence) of properties for acquisitions or dispositions among other recurring and non-recurring events.
    • Initiate, execute and manage purchase orders and contracts to contractors in accordance with scopes of work and established standards for each project. Maintain files for order correspondence, specifications and drawings as required. Review for accuracy.
    • Consult with the Corporate Food and Beverage Director and operational management team as necessary.
    • Work collaboratively with the Hotel Performance Support Team, specifically the Director of Procurement and Cost Management, on purchasing and procurement needs that overlap into operations. Utilize purchasing programs already in place such as HSM, Grainger, and others to maximize the group's purchasing power.
    • Manage assigned facility-related emergency capital expenses or major repair work.
    • Product Knowledge and Training - Working in tandem with the Operations Management team, recommend relevant training opportunities and implement them, where appropriate:

    • Identify self-development initiatives and training needs to enhance product knowledge, performance and leadership skills.
    • Interact with Chief Engineers, General Managers and other operational management team members as required to assist them with enhancement of their knowledge.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engineering: Understand and be able to demonstrate criticality of preventive maintenance, routine inspections, guest service recovery, asset protection, procurement guidelines and capital expenditures as it relates to the engineering function.  Teach and demonstrate to field engineers the impact of maintaining company assets within budget guidelines and how it impacts the overall financial success of the hotel division.
  • CMMS Systems and Monitoring:  Demonstrate a mastery of computerized maintenance management systems and support use in the field.  Assist field team with set up and proper use of CMMS system. Where applicable, remotely monitor all building systems to ensure proper use of technology and set up and response to alerts.
  • Inspection and Reporting:  Conduct routine inspections of hotels and engineering operations, formal and informal, to ensure compliance with standards.  Assess and evaluate functionality of all equipment and assets. Review maintenance work to ensure length of life and usefulness of items can be realized.  Prepare written reports summarizing findings when appropriate.
  • Capital Projects: Directly manage select MEP and related capital projects on behalf of ownership.  Liaise with hotel leadership and contractors to ensure smooth implementation of projects. Assist AVP with identification of project needs and preparation of capital budgets.
  • Troubleshooting:  Support field teams in resolution of problems or systemic engineering issues and provide repair/maintenance solutions
  • Expense Management:  Seeks and implements cost saving measures and efficient purchasing strategies in order to meet/exceed budget for expenses.   Assist field team with obtaining quotes and implementing strategies to minimize M&R expenses.
  • Vendor relations:  Interact with vendors to help manage successful deployment of preferred vendor agreements.  Identify new vendors for consideration. 
  • Standards Implementation:  Follows B. F. Saul Company Hospitality Group’s standard operating procedures:  Be knowledgeable in all engineering SOP’s, and assist field team with compliance of standards.  
  • Engineering Leader Assessment:  Routinely review and assess efficacy of engineering leadership.  Communicate issues or opportunities for growth or advancement among field engineers. 
  • Training:  Provides on-the-job-training: Identifies training opportunities and provide one-on-one or group training in specific tasks or SOP’s as appropriate.
  • Innovation: Seek, identify, and research innovative technologies, processes, entities, etc. that represent potential value additions to the engineering function of the hospitality group.
  • Works collaboratively with all others:  Supports all departments to ensure excellent customer service as it relates to maintenance and equipment issues. 
  • Self/Workload Management: Must have high attention to detail, good communication skills, leadership ability and excellent problem solving skills. Must have high level of technical expertise as it relates to the position. Must have excellent organization skills, a high degree of creativity to facilitate efficient problem solving. Must be able to manage multiple priorities and have high attention to detail. Must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and tight deadlines.
  • Travel: Visit all hotels in portfolio at a frequency necessary to meet above requirements.

    Required Skills and Experience:

    Education: 
  • Accredited College education - 2-year degree preferred. High school diploma or GED required. 
  • Specific technical expertise in common hotel technology systems and business software use such as HotSOS and/or Hotel ServicePro preferred.
  • Professional certifications in HVAC, boiler operation, electrical, or plumbing required
  • Experience: 
  • Regional Chief Engineer for like-sized company or Chief Engineer for a 500+ Room Hotel or Resort.
  • Overall engineering/ facilities management experience of 10+ years, with a minimum of 5 years in the hospitality field.
  • Must be detail oriented, have ability to communicate well with all levels within and outside the organization, and be able to problem-solve with team members and guests. 
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally lift, push, and pull up to 100 pounds consistently throughout shift.
