Job Description:

COORDINATOR OF FITNESS OPERATIONS

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Fitness, the Coordinator of Fitness Operations assists in the organization and administration of fitness, supervision of fitness assistant staff/personal trainers, and management of equipment & resources. Through ensuring the fitness floors are well maintained and operated, the Coordinator develops a welcoming environment that fosters a sense of community when utilizing the UREC. 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Support the supervision of student staff who manage the fitness floors
  • Train and supervise students who work as Fitness Assistants and/or Personal Trainers
  • Provide direct support for members who participate in our Personal Training program
  • Familiarity with the best practices as it relates to fitness and wellness that align with our mission

Enhance the student and member experience

Nearly 30,000 distinct LSU students and members utilize the UREC at least once a year. This position has a leadership role in establishing consistent, high-quality experiences for how members engage within our fitness programs and services. Through ensuring the fitness floors are well maintained and operated, the coordinator develops a welcoming environment that fosters a sense of community when utilizing the UREC. 


Optimize student staff experience

Actively engages in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and scheduling of new Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainers. Further, meets regularly with student employees and conducts evaluations. Commit and support a culture that embraces and encourages an environment dedicated to student success. 


ATTRIBUTES OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

  • Ability to supervise and guide with clarity the student staff to execute the vision and culture for the Fitness Operation.
  • Understand and prioritize tasks with a sense of urgency. Or something along those lines knowing there will be tasks and deadlines, etc.
  • Driven to enhance the user experience in the fitness area by observing and discerning patterns and behaviors of participants.
  • Is familiar with best and innovative fitness and wellness practices. The successful candidate will be part of the ideation process for programs.
  • When addressed with concerns or questions related to fitness operations, will work to find creative solutions while considering current conditions and policies.
  • Build/ establish healthy and professional relationships with peers across the department.
  • Stay curious and eager to learn.

ABOUT THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PRIORITIES:

Finally, we design programs, services, events, and experiences with everyone in mind. 


RESPONSIBILITIES EXPLAINED:
Direct Student Support (40%)

Guide and direct student members as well as student staff on the proper usage of fitness equipment. Translate department efforts, initiatives, and goals to students through interactions at programs, services, events, and experiences. Serve as the liaison between (fitness staff) students and the leadership in the unit. Responsible for developing trainings that ensure Fitness student employees are knowledgeable about UREC policy and procedures related to ensuring a safe environment in all our fitness spaces. 


Quality Control (25%) 

Ensures every aspect of [programmatic/administrative/financial/facility/etc] outputs including administrative tasks, implementation, and overall design exudes a high degree of quality.Embraces and executes a belief for continuous improvement and applies to elevate the level of all services, events, programs, and experiences in department. 


Program Support (20%)

Responsible for operations of fitness programs, services, events, and/or experiences. Provides input on overall expenditures, experiences and services within fitness. Oversees the daily execution of the personal training program.

 

Administrative Support (10%) 

Support the day-to-day fitness operations through administrative management while working with UREC business administration to ensure policies are being followed and updated when necessary. Provides feedback regarding programs and experiences by personally using UREC. Contributes to the work environment by developing and maintaining positive relationships that support a culture of teamwork and cooperation. 


Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Associate Director of Programs or Assistant Director of Fitness. This includes but is not limited to efforts that support broad division/institution efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Career Expo, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects etc.  


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion/Education, Nutrition, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Related experience
  • LSU values skills, experience, and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply— a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Health Promotion/Education, Nutrition, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Higher Education, Business, Public Administration, or related field
  • 2 years professional work experience in collegiate recreation, fitness facility, and or corporate fitness 

DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited personal training certification. Examples are but not limited to; Academy of Applied Personal Training (AAPTE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), and/or International Fitness Professionals Association (IFPA) 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:

Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours. We support, when appropriate, the ability to have a flexible work schedule. 


Due to the position’s physical requirements, a pre-employment physical examination will be required per FASOP: HR-04. 


As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
