Content Accessibility Lead

Internal title: Associate Director, Content Accessibility

College Board – Learning & Assessment

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role Type: This is a full-time position

About the Team

The Content Accessibility team at College Board has the privilege and responsibility of ensuring that College Board assessments are accessible for individuals with disabilities. Our work is both specialized and broad: we work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to write and review image descriptions, consult with technology teams to improve accessibility supports in authoring tools, and collaborate with accessibility and accommodations specialists across the organization to ensure test content meets policy and the needs of test-takers. We not only advocate for universal design, we live it.

About the Opportunity

As a Content Accessibility Lead, you have two primary audiences for your work: the first is students who take College Board assessments, especially those who do so using assistive technology. The second is the makers of College Board assessments. You are a bridge between those audiences.

Being a bridge means your work is often focused: you write and review image descriptions, review caption tracks, and apply headings to ensure every test question meets accessibility guidelines. And when we say every test question, we mean it. When it comes to making test content accessible, we are completists. It also means you keep your eyes on the big picture, advocating to colleagues and leadership alike for tools, authoring standards, and processes that build accessibility in from the start and for innovations that position College Board as an industry leader in accessible testing.

In Content Accessibility, everything you do is focused on one goal: ensuring College Board assessments are accessible so that all students, no matter their ability, can show what they know and can do.

In this role, you will:

Writer & reviewer (70%)

  • Write accessible test content (including image descriptions), maintaining high standards of quality and care, for College Board assessments.

  • Review and remediate test content to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) prior to test packaging and publishing, ensuring all tests meet Section 504 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

  • Act as an authority on accessible-content standards, adjudicating edge cases when guidance is unclear

  • Review and remediate test-adjacent content (e.g., research studies, scoring guidelines) to conform to WCAG, ensuring all publications meet Section 504 and ADA requirements.

  • Conduct quality-control, accessibility, and usability reviews of tests and applications.

  • Produce error-free deliverables such as reader scripts and braille transcription notes, as needed.

  • Write and maintain image description guidelines, authoring standards and practices (e.g., for mode transformations), documentation, presentations, and tools (e.g., user personas).

  • Conduct application testing and troubleshooting.

  • Document processes and seek efficiency in all our work.

Advocate and leader (30%)

  • Advocate for users of accessible technology at every opportunity.

  • Synthesize accessibility research, web standards, and user-experience findings into clear evidence-based recommendations to improve tooling, processes, and authoring standards; present and advocate for those recommendations to program and organization leadership.

  • Represent Content Accessibility, including the team’s aims, standards, constraints, and risk considerations, in planning conversations with teams across College Board, ensuring accessibility is built into all processes, tools, and assessments.

  • Educate and mentor others about universal design, accessibility, and accommodations, such as through presentations and meaningful feedback on work.

About You

You have:

  • 5–7 years of experience in accessibility or accommodations-focused roles, technical writing, or assessment content writing, with at least 2–3 years specifically in accessibility or accommodations-related work (e.g., accessibility specialist, inclusive designer, Section 508 compliance analyst)

  • Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated experience writing or editing (e.g., technical writer or editor)

  • Fluency in web-content accessibility (WCAG, ARIA) and/or universal design

  • Strong organization and prioritization skills and the proven ability to move forward multiple projects in concert, both independently and as a member of the team

  • Outstanding curiosity about emerging trends and best practices in web standards and accessibility

  • Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certification preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Travel 1-2 times a year to our NYC or Reston, VA, offices

  • Authorization to work in the United States

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work

  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.

  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal

  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.

  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.

  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success

  • Authorization to work in the United States

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.

  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise such as live coding, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.
