Work Hours per week: up to 20.0

Hourly Rate of Pay: $14.00

What our office does: This office assists students with disabilities by providing them with appropriate accommodations.

Position Description

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) Disability Resource Center is seeking dependable, student-focused student employees to help create an accessible, inclusive, and welcoming college experience.
 

DRC Student Access Aides are matched with specific assignments based on their interests, skills, availability, completed training, and departmental needs. Assignments may involve academic access support, alternative testing proctoring, basic accessibility technology assistance, front-desk student support, or DRC project/outreach assistance. Student employees are not expected to perform every duty listed; comprehensive training and ongoing staff guidance are provided for every assigned task.
 

Possible Assignments Areas

  • Academic Access Support: Assist with approved accommodations such as verbatim peer note-taking, reading, scribing, or laboratory physical support under clear instructions from DRC staff and faculty.

  • Alternative Testing: Help prepare testing spaces, monitor accommodated exams under established testing protocols, maintain secure chain-of-custody for exam materials, and promptly report irregularities to DRC staff.

  • Accessibility Technology: Assist students with basic setup and routine operation of approved accessibility equipment or software (e.g., smart pens, basic text-to-speech) following training, referring technical issues to the Assistive Technologist.

  • Student & Office Support: Welcome students and visitors, answer routine inquiries, assist with forms and process navigation, schedule appointments in AIM/MyCSN, and complete general office tasks.

  • DRC Projects & Outreach: Support workshops, orientation events (e.g., Ready, Set, Accommodate!), informational materials, supply management, and campus outreach activities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Follow established DRC procedures and assignment-specific instructions, actively seeking guidance whenever a situation is unclear or outside approved training.

  • Treat all students, faculty, staff, and visitors with utmost professionalism, respect, patience, and courtesy.

  • Maintain accurate, timely records of assigned work, shift attendance, testing activity, or room incidents.

  • Strictly protect student records, disability-related documentation, exam materials, passwords, and confidential information in compliance with FERPA, ADA/504, CSN policy, and DRC guidelines.

  • Promptly refer all disability disclosures, medical documentation, complaints, accommodation disputes, technical bugs, or testing irregularities to professional DRC staff.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and communicate schedule changes or barriers to staff immediately.

Role Boundaries & Limitations Student Access Aides support routine operations and established services. They do not:

  • Determine accommodation eligibility, interpret disability/medical documentation, or provide disability advising.

  • Proactively proctor exams for personal friends or current classmates (conflicts of interest must be disclosed for reassignment).

  • Alter course requirements, tutor, edit student work, complete coursework, or substitute for faculty.

  • Provide personal care (feeding, restroom assistance, physical lifting/transferring), medical/clinical care, professional ASL interpreting, or professional speech-to-text/CART services.

  • Conduct safety-sensitive lab work without separate review, authorization, and specialized safety training.

Training & Supervision

  • Work under the direct supervision of designated DRC professional staff.

  • Sign the DRC Student Employee Confidentiality Agreement and complete mandatory FERPA, ADA, safety, and assignment-specific training prior to starting duties.

  • Perform only those duties for which formal instructions and authorization have been provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Current CSN enrollment meeting student-employment criteria (verified Federal Work-Study eligibility when required for FWS positions).

  • Demonstrated dependability, organization, attention to detail, and ability to follow strict procedures.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with diverse populations.

  • Demonstrated respect for the privacy, lived experiences, and civil rights of individuals with disabilities.

Work Experience in our Department supports the following Degree/Certificate Programs:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong listening and writing skills.

  • Ability to focus and follow lectures closely.

  • Ability to summarize information accurately.

  • Reliable, punctual, and organized.

  • Legible handwriting or strong typing skills.

  • Interest in disability access, higher education, student affairs, or peer support.

  • Prior experience in customer service, office administration, testing, lab support, or campus leadership.

  • Familiarity with basic accessibility tools, scheduling platforms, or records management.

  • Show a financial aid eligible major (degree or certificate program) declared with the CSN Office of the Registrar, and

  • Meet Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress after each semester/term to qualify for employment within the academic year, and

  • Show degree compliant enrollment for each semester/term for which funding is desired.

  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credits and meet additional eligibility requirements of the Silver State Regents Service Program for summer semester/term employment.

  • *Student’s cannot work another part-time position within NSHE at the same time they are employed as a CSN College Work Study student.
