Summary

Under the Direction of the VP of Nursing and in collaboration with the Nursing Supervisors, the Clinical Practice Supervisor is an experienced critical care or emergency department registered nurse who serves as an expert clinical resource throughout the hospital. The role focuses on early recognition and intervention for patients who are clinically deteriorating outside the ICU and Emergency Department, helping prevent cardiac arrest and other adverse events. They are clinical experts in assessment, in depth chart analysis, and ensuring regulatory readiness by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing practice along with supervisory evaluation of RN’s during rounding and clinically significant events.

The Clinical Practice Supervisor must possess strong problem-solving skills, incorporate organizational awareness, make effective use of team resources and be able to engage with staff, patients, families and clinical leadership in a professional, constructive and non-judgmental manner.

Minimum Qualifications:  

Education/Licensure:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)   

  • Current New Hampshire Registered Nurse license   

Required Certifications  

  • BLS (American Heart Association)  

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)  

Preferred/Encouraged Certifications  

  • CCRN  

  • TNCC  

  • PALS  

  • CSU-ALS  

  • BD Fundamentals of Ultrasound for Vascular Access Placement   

Experience  

  • Minimum 3 years of Critical Care or Emergency Department RN experience   

  • Demonstrated leadership progression   

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and staff education   

Primary Responsibilities  

The Clinical Practice Supervisor:  

  • Identifies patients at risk for clinical deterioration through assessment of vital signs, labs, medications, history, and clinical status.   

  • Leads Rapid Response Teams (RRT), stroke activations, and Code Blue events.   

  • Provides expert bedside clinical support during emergencies.   

  • Serves as a hospital wide mentor and real time educator for bedside nursing staff.   

  • Coordinates communication among physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members.   

  • Delegates and supervises nursing care during emergencies.  

  • Supports patients and families during critical events.  

  • Ensures complete and accurate documentation.  

  • Conducts post-event debriefings to improve team performance.   

  • Participates in regulatory readiness, quality improvement, education, and organizational initiatives.

This is an advanced clinical leadership position. The emphasis is on:  

  • Rapid Response Team leadership  

  • Early recognition of patient deterioration  

  • Hospital-wide clinical consultation  

  • Staff education and mentorship  

  • Quality improvement and regulatory readiness   

  • Hands-on critical care expertise  

  • Supervision and evaluation of RN/LNA clinical competencies.  

The ideal candidate is a seasoned ICU or Emergency Department nurse who enjoys responding to complex clinical situations, leading interdisciplinary teams, and coaching bedside nurses while remaining actively involved in direct patient care.  

Additional Management Responsibilities  

  • Provides operational leadership during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, serving as a clinical and administrative resource to nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams.   

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Directors, Nursing Managers and Nursing Supervisors to oversee daily clinical operations, patient flow, staffing coordination, and resource allocation to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

  • Assists in evaluating staffing needs based on patient acuity, census, and organizational priorities, making recommendations to optimize workforce utilization while maintaining quality and patient safety.  

  • Participates in interviewing, onboarding, orientation, and competency validation of new nursing staff, supporting successful integration into the organization.  

  • Manages, coaches, mentors, and develops nursing staff through performance feedback, clinical consultation, and professional development opportunities, fostering accountability, engagement, and continuous learning.  

  • Participates in performance management initiatives by identifying opportunities for improvement, documenting performance concerns, and collaborating with nursing leadership on corrective action plans when appropriate.  

  • Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management initiatives through analysis of clinical outcomes, event reports, near misses, and patient safety indicators, implementing corrective actions as appropriate.   

  • Assists with regulatory compliance activities, accreditation readiness, and policy implementation to ensure adherence to federal, state, and organizational standards.   

  • Collaborates with department leaders to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based clinical practice standards, workflows, and process improvement initiatives.   

  • Monitors utilization of clinical resources, equipment, and supplies, identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and cost-effective patient care.   

  • Participates in leadership meetings, committees, and organizational initiatives, representing the Access Value Stream and contributing to strategic planning and operational decision-making.   

  • Serves as the administrative escalation point for complex patient care, staffing, and operational issues, resolving concerns in collaboration with physicians, nursing leadership, ancillary departments, and hospital administration.   

  • Promotes a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork, diversity, equity, inclusion, and psychological safety by modeling organizational values and addressing conflicts in a timely and constructive manner.   

  • Assists in succession planning by identifying high-potential staff, supporting leadership development, and encouraging specialty certification and professional advancement.  

  • Maintains accountability for confidentiality, ethical decision-making, regulatory compliance, and adherence to organizational policies and standards of professional nursing practice.  

These responsibilities include operations management, staff development, performance management, quality oversight, and administrative leadership.
