As a Bioinformatics Technologist I or II, you will develop, maintain and run software systems and bioinformatic pipelines for processing and analyzing next-generation sequencing data. In this role, you will perform software programming in various languages, including raw data quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation and reporting. You will provide input to develop software and data analysis solutions, complete department tasks and provide ongoing support for existing databases and software while working collaboratively with software engineers, computational biologists, and clinical and basic research scientists.

This role will participate in translational cancer research. The laboratory of Dr. Przybyl develops novel, clinically applicable liquid biopsy testing methods for sarcoma and applies multi-omic (genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and methylome) high-throughput methods to discover new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets in sarcomas. In this role, you will build bioinformatic pipelines, analyze high-throughput data and interpret results using statistical techniques. You will also develop and implement data analyses, acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases.

We will hire our Bioinformatics Technologist in two different job titles, based on educational background:  

  • Bioinformatics Technologist

  • Bioinformatics Technologist II

A caregiver in this role works days from 8:00 a.m. -- 5:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Assist with testing hypotheses and designing studies and recommending analytical strategies.

  • Develop basic statistical, mathematical and predictive models, build algorithms and perform data analytics.

  • In collaboration with bioinformatics specialists, maintain and run software systems for bioinformatics processing of sequence data, including raw data quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation and reporting.

  • Develop and implement workflows for data analysis tools in collaboration with research scientists.

  • Build and deploy data analysis support systems for large datasets, including well-structured flat files, APIs and other types of services.

  • Acquire, clean, structure and manage data from multiple sources to ensure data quality.

  • Utilize process enhancement opportunities to improve the efficiency of data pulling, reporting, programming and operations.

  • Support existing production pipelines

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed.

  • Identify, evaluate and apply new computational methodologies and emerging technologies to improve existing methods and tools.

  • Analyze genomics data in partnership with experimental and computational team members, industry partners and collaborators.

  • Perform literature reviews to learn about gold standard data analysis methods.

  • Write scripts, run analyses, visualize data and create figures for papers, presentations and posters.

  • Solve problems related to data analysis and troubleshoot and adapt published methodologies.

  • Prepare data for a variety of research projects.

  • Assist lab members, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, with training on bioinformatic tools.

  • Supervise and train trainees in their quantitative research projects.

  • Contribute to research protocols and grant proposals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Bioinformatics Technologist
 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field (such as Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Business Intelligence)

  • Ability to participate within a multidisciplinary team of IT professionals, physicians, molecular biologists, computer scientists, and biostatisticians

  • Possess knowledge of conducting data analytics, math or statistical modeling or machine learning

  • Experience in bioinformatics software

  • Detailed knowledge of core bioinformatics concepts and skills

  • Experience or willingness to learn R for specialized tasks and integration with data analytics workflows

  • Experience producing useful code (not necessarily in context of employment - personal projects or contributions to open-source projects are applicable)

  • Demonstrated experience in communication/presentation skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Proficiency in interpreted languages; Python or Perl

  • Experience with high-performance computing cluster

  • Experience analyzing high-throughput genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic data (e.g., microarray data, next generation sequencing data) supported by published peer-reviewed studies

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)

Bioinformatics Technologist II
 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science/software engineering/bioinformatics or related field and three years of relevant experience

  • OR Master’s degree in a similar field and one year of relevant experience

  • Experience in DNA and RNA-seq data analysis

  • Solid understanding of all stages of software development cycle

  • Fluency in programming languages (Java, Python, Perl, R), UNIX shell scripts and database management systems (MySQL or PostgreSQL)

  • Experience with common bioinformatics tools (BWA, Bowtie, SAMtools, GATK, MuTect, VarScan, Strelka, STAR)

  • Proficiency with Linux/UNIX tools in high-performance computing clusters (HPC) environment

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing data

  • Familiarity with agile software development approach

  • Experience with Cloud Computing

  • Experience analyzing high-throughput genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic data (e.g., microarray data, next generation sequencing data) supported by published peer-reviewed studies

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)

*The compensation range provided corresponds to the Bioinformatics Technologist I or Bioinformatics Technologist II position. Individual pay rates may vary depending on Education Background and Relevant Experience* 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.

  • Ability to travel throughout the hospital system.

  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment. 

  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.

Personal Protective Equipment:
