Job Description Summary

MUSC Health – Orangeburg is seeking a passionate Certified Athletic Trainer to play a meaningful role at the heart of community sports and health. In this dynamic position, you’ll support the Rehab Services and Sports Medicine Departments while serving Orangeburg County School District student-athletes directly at a high school site. You’ll be a trusted point-of-care professional, delivering prevention, injury management, on-field coverage, rehabilitation, referral guidance, and community outreach for athletes across multiple age groups. Under the collaboration of a skilled healthcare team including physicians, physical therapists, and advanced practice providers, you’ll help keep athletes safe, strong, and ready for the next play.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities:

Attends assigned athletic events

A. Is punctual and professional in attire and behavior 100% of the time.

B. Provides acute evaluation of sports related injuries.

C. Monitors exacerbation of chronic conditions requiring medical attention.

D. Utilizes professional judgment to triage patients to appropriate level of care.

E. Actively refers potential patients to MUSC services.

F. Works collaboratively with the team’s coaches and athletes.

G. Acts as liaison between physician/physical therapist and team coach.

H. Communicates playing status of the athlete to MD, PT, and coach on a regular basis.

Communication

A. Responds to electronic communication and meeting requests in a timely manner

B. For referred athletes - sends information including patient history and MOI to the appropriate healthcare provider

C. Regularly updates success factors throughout the year

D. Consistently manages schedule and ATC Calendar

Assessment and Documentation

A. Selects and performs appropriate assessment procedures based on accepted practice standards.

B. Assessment of general medical sports related conditions, injuries and fitness to play.

C. Refers to appropriate professionals to include; orthopedic surgeon, primary care physician, physical therapist, and psychologist.

D. Documentation for referred athletes is completed on day of injury/referral in the ATC referral database/documentation system

E. Documentation for non-referred athletes is completed on day of injury and updated regularly in ATC referral database/documentation system

F. Accurately documents results such as range of motion, strength, reflexes, palpation, visual appearance, diagnosis, treatment plan and playing status

Treatment and Plan of Care

A. Is proficient with taping, bracing, padding, for treatment of acute injuries and injury prevention.

B. Proficient with wound care on the field for acute sports injuries.

C. Safely and appropriately administers modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, heat, ice, etc…

D. Is knowledgeable about prophylactic bracing and sports related Durable medical equipment.

E. Develops a patient specific rehabilitation program designed to restore function after injury, aid in injury prevention and enhance athletic performance.

F. Appropriately refers patients to MUSC Sports Medicine services

G. Coordinates return to play care and maintenance program with treating physician and PT

Health and Wellness

A. Organizes and pre-participation physical screening/assessments.

B. Maintains documentation for PPEs

C. Identifies concerns and refers to the appropriate health care provider.

D. Establishes a program to monitor athletes’ health status throughout the year.

E. Develops and Implements Sports Performance and Conditioning Program

F. Successfully implements Injury Prevention program for multiple sports.

G. Monitors outcomes of the program.

Minimum Training and Education:

1. Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination;

2. Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association;

3. Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of South Carolina or gain SC licensure within 6 months upon selection for position;

4. Participation in continuing education (75 CEU's every 3 years).

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy.

  • Ability to work rotating shifts.

  • Ability to work overtime as required.

  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

To best assist the Sports Medicine and Rehab Services Departments in clinical practice, the Athletic Trainer should have the following qualifications:

1. Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or other appropriate field;

2. Possess previous Orthopaedic experience;

3. Have experience with clinical Orthopaedic operations.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited college with a BS/BA. (Master's degree in athletic training preferred).

  • Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC).

  • Certified as an Athletic Trainer in South Carolina by DHEC.

  • Must be able to adjust communication both verbal and non-verbal to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide variety of age groups including school age adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

  • Weekend and evening hours to cover practices, games, tournaments, and special events.

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders. (Frequent) Ability to fully use both legs. (Continuous)

  • Ability to reach in all directions. (Continuous) Possess good finger dexterity. (Continuous)

  • Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions. (Continuous)

  • Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function. (Continuous) Ability to lift and carry 150 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent)

  • Ability to lift objects, up to 75 lbs., from floor level to height of 36 inches, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lower objects, up to 75 lbs., from height of 36 inches to floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift and carry patients weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Frequent)

  • Ability to push/pull objects, up to 200 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous)

  • Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous)

  • Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous)

  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous)

  • Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet. Must be able to maintain bi-lateral hand movement skills. (Continuous)

  • Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.
