Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of The Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering) to begin Fall 2027.
TAMIU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with over 8,000 students, located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The University advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement, and public service, with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. This is a tenure-track, nine-month Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering position. A reduced teaching load supports research development. Primary duties will include establishing an independent, externally funded research program in geotechnical engineering; contributing to the development of the School’s geotechnical engineering laboratory; contributing to the BS in Civil Engineering with primary responsibility for lectures and laboratories in topics such as geotechnical engineering, foundation design, and slopes and retaining structures; and mentoring student research and senior design projects. Duties also include teaching other Civil Engineering and engineering courses as needed; supporting recruitment, preparation for future ABET accreditation, and service; collaborating with academia, industry, and government; and pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure when eligible. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in Fall 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in Fall 2027. This geotechnical hire and another structural hire will join an environmental engineering colleague hired last year. Together, they will lead the Civil Engineering program’s Fall 2027 launch, supported by strong regional demand for civil engineers. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in geotechnical engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof, and the ability to teach lectures and laboratories in topics such as geotechnical engineering, foundation design, and slopes and retaining structures; mentor student research; and establish an independent research program. Areas of particular interest include advanced site characterization and field monitoring; shallow and deep foundations and soil-structure interaction; sustainable or bio-mediated ground improvement and geosynthetics; climate-resilient geotechnics (unsaturated soils, slopes, erosion, and geohazards); energy geotechnics; and computational and data-driven geomechanics (AI/ML and digital twins). Experience or ability to develop a geotechnical lab, pursue external funding, and build industry and government partnerships is especially desirable. PE licensure or progress toward it (e.g., FE/EIT) is highly desirable.
We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the University.
