Job Description

DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL/COLLEGE: Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Justice Studies/School of Social Sciences/College of Humanities and Social Sciences

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Justice Studies at Montclair State University is actively seeking applications for an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice to begin in August 2027. For this tenure-track appointment, we are engaging in a broad search in any area of criminal justice or criminology, however, we are particularly searching for professors ready to offer courses in our required sequence, including research methods, criminology, and/or the department’s interdisciplinary course on theories of justice.

Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

Teaching: The standard annual teaching load for tenure-track faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) a semester, with additional TCH reassigned time (course release) available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs. Faculty are expected to center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and developing and updating courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.

.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity: Faculty are expected to be productive scholars or artists whose work embodies formal inquiry or creative expression that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge. Research results must be shared in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues following rigorous review. The University supports these endeavors through the Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP), which typically provides research-active faculty with up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year to pursue their scholarly agenda.

.

Service: Faculty members are expected to perform valuable service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities. This includes participating in shared governance, academic program vitality, and sharing professional expertise within and beyond the University. Service activities are separate and distinct from the specific assignments for which faculty members receive course release.

The Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Justice Studies is the second largest department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.  Our criminal justice concentration alone has over five hundred enrolled majors.  We also offer a master’s degree in Justice Innovation and Leadership.  Featuring dynamic faculty from a variety of disciplines, our interdisciplinary focus includes Criminal Justice/Criminology, Law, International Justice, and Social Justice. Justice Studies serves a large minoritized and first generation college student population. Our faculty are dedicated to providing support and guidance for our students, as well as a robust education experience to prepare them for the workforce.

THE COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES:

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is Montclair State’s largest college, with over 5,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. CHSS facilitates traditional and interdisciplinary learning and is the professional home of many outstanding scholars and instructors across numerous disciplines, all of whom lend to CHSS’s mission to furnish academically rigorous and relevant programs of study that contribute to the development of an informed and engaged civil society. CHSS’s programs develop in students the abilities to discover, create, evaluate, apply, and share knowledge, so that they will be able to think critically, act ethically, and be informed citizen-participants prepared to assume leadership roles in their communities. CHSS also aims to be responsive to the needs of society, including via its championing of use-inspired research collaboratively undertaken by faculty and students, and graduate programs that train students to apply knowledge in constructive, inspiring, and practical ways that benefit our local and broader communities.
