Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Educator at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. This position is conditional on the Institution successfully obtaining a PEM (i.e. physician permit) for this position.

The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is highly committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical care, research, and medical education. As a relatively small division, candidates will be expected to demonstrate an appreciation for the breadth of physiatry and have a vision for how to grow it while demonstrating an ability to work as part of a team.
 

Job Duties

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate’s major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of physicians. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.

As a Clinician-Educator, the successful candidate will focus on education research of sufficient caliber to publish in peer-reviewed journals or education administration with a focus on leading/developing world-class training programs.

This position is focused on Palliative Care, an evolving area of practice within Physiatry. Clinical responsibilities include providing inpatient and ambulatory palliative care consultations at the adult sites of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), including the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Montreal General Hospital. Participation in on-call coverage within this area of practice is expected. The successful candidate will also contribute to the weekly Cancer Pain Clinic. Additional opportunities may be available to participate in consultations through the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit and in general physiatry services at the Montreal General Hospital.

The incumbent will be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree;

• Have completed specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation;

• Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation;

• Be eligible for licensure in Quebec and certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;

• Have at least one additional year of clinical training in Palliative Care or Pain Management;

• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
